A pic from Doulian String Pickers
« on: December 21, 2009, 12:12:51 PM »
At school Mark had demonstrated a flair for English and in 1967 he went to study journalism for a year at Harlow Technical College. At the end of the course he secured a job in Leeds as a junior reporter on the Yorkshire Evening Post. After two years he decided to further his studies and commenced a degree in English at Leeds University. It was whilst Mark was living in Leeds that he met a local blues singer/guitarist by the name of Steve Phillips. Mark wrote newspaper articles and reviews on the music scene in and around Leeds. By an odd coincidence, Mark's boss was another man by the name of Stephen Phillips. This has caused some confusion over the years and a number of Steve Phillips biographies have claimed erroneously that Steve himself worked as a journalist. Mark and his boss - the other 'Steve Phillips' - went to see Steve playing in Leeds. Steve fondly recalls how Mark's first words were "Steve Phillips, meet Steve Phillips."

Steve and Mark found that musically they had much in common and they went on to form a duo called The Duolian String Pickers. By day Mark continued working as a reporter and, later, as a full-time student, while Steve took a job restoring paintings and furniture at Leeds City Art Gallery and Temple Newsam House. They played together on and off over the next five years. Some of their work is featured on Steve's 1996 Just Pickin' album.

My idea of heaven is a place where the Tyne meets the Delta, where folk music meets the blues.

Thank you, allen.   I recognize Steve, in the middle, but I'm just guessing that the guitarist, with the hat, on the left is Mark!   :)

I have the same opinion, Val.  And I guess the guitar MK was playing belongs to Steve.  Is it the same style of guitar which was used on the song The Man's Too Strong?

it is 1928 National Tricone. Mark bought it in 1969. Richard Bennett uses this Tricone during the tours.

Yeah, a tricone. Mark used to record Water of Love and Romea & Juliet I think.

Mark's is a round neck, Richard seems to have a square neck which means it can only be played lying on your lap.

Here is the same picture!  ;D I posted it in the biography about Mark at my forum in November 2008! LOL

There is also a text with the picture and I like to share that. Here it is:

A performance by the Duolian String Pickers before the good folk of the Horsforth Mechanic

This is a great thread, and if you can find the cd "Just Pickin' it's well worth the price.   It's a jewel.
But a spoonful of forgiveness
Goes a long, long way
And we all should do our best
To get along
