20 TO 1 "Best Live acts of all time"
« on: November 22, 2009, 02:04:42 AM »
Hi folks.

Started this as the result of a TV show here in Oz which rated the top 20 Live acts of all time. I was surprised that a band that did hundreds of Stadium gigs from 1985 to 1992 and which sold more than 100 million albums couldn't squeeze their way into the top 20. Still I'll say 2 things:- these things are very subjective (It was acts not musicians/groups) and it was done in Australia (No taste when it comes to pure musical talent - In general)

Here is their list:-

20. Pink
19. Guns N' Roses
18. Jimi Hendrix
17. John Farnham
16. The Beatles
15. Bruce Springsteen
14. Tina Turner
13. Coldplay
12. Elvis Presley
11. ABBA
10. INXS
9. Kylie Minogue
8. The Rolling Stones
7. Robbie Williams
6. AC/DC
5. Crowded House
4. Micheal Jackson
3. Madonna
2. U2
1. Queen

Well, in my opinion it's ridiculous that Springsteen is behind, say, Abba (although I'm Swedish), but DS weren't exactly famous for their exciting live gigs, were they? Always superb music effortlessly played, indeed, but Mark was always a musician first and a frontman second. And still, he was always the one with the most presence.

This kind of thing always angers me because although people may have their opinions they always seem to vote for some artist who makes a show an "event" rather than an actual music concert which is what it should be all about.  One would end up going to a Michael Jackson concert for example just to watch the dancing and the sheer spectacle rather than great musicianship and songwriting, yet that seems to be forgotten about.  Anyone can put on a great spectacle if they want though, you don't need to have a great talent for that, just spend some money!  Take away the spectacle that most of these artists put on and they have nothing to offer because they have very little talent.  Most are well overrated and need the show to back them up due to their lack of talent.

Still here's some comfort, no offense to our Australian members but it's the same country where Britney "lip synch" Spears quickly sold out this year:

Crowded House? Yes, must be a "down under" poll.  ;) So many great acts missing from that list...

More years ago than I care to remember, an art prof showed our class two films, each about a sculptor.  One film showed his work from different angles, with voice over of his comments about the pieces. A narrator spoke of the artist's history and theory.   The second film had drums and bad guitar as accompaniment, with the sculpts shown in red and blue lights.    Maybe they were flashing.    At the end, the prof asked us which was the true artist.   It was obvious, but no one wanted to raise a hand to say--including me.    Perhaps they didn't know.
I often think of those two films when I see guests shots of performers on tv or when I'm at one of the few concerts I go to.   It seems that in most cases these days, very seldom does the music stand on its own; very seldom does the true artists respect his own music enough to keep it pure, without the razzle dazzle.    Music--performance--event--skin show?
But a spoonful of forgiveness
Goes a long, long way
And we all should do our best
To get along

Hmm, kind of strange list... Springsteen not in the top 5 is suspicious... That IS a live act! :D

A "depressed" Brittany leaves Adelaide today after her last show of the tour, vowing to never return to Oz again, following walk outs and bad media reports during her "lip sync" tour.  :o

Darn, never thought I'd say this, but I wish I lived down under...
