It must have been quite something, given that Mark even wrote a song about the incident (Let's See You)

No way of knowing for sure what this song is about but given the timelines it's unlikely it was about this incident.

Ed and MK parted ways while planning promo for STP (as per the podcast). So probably Summer 2000?

Let's See You was on the CD single of What It Is, released September 2000. So seems unlikely that MK would have got the 96ers together and rushed out a diss-track like Biggie or Tupac.

I see your point, but I'm not convinced the timeline speaks against the theory that Let's See You is about Ed Bicknell. They may have parted ways only in September 2000, and but the incident -- or some other, previous incident -- may have happened quite some time before that. Also, the song's intro ("Tonight we pushed the border ...") speaks against Mark writing about some random musician. Like Terminal of Tribute to, this song is personal. And there are only so many people who qualify as its subject.

I believe the lyric is "Tonight we pushed the boat out..."

True. The lyrics are printed at "Gravy Train: The B-Sides 1996-2007". I checked.

Funnily, all those years I also always thought it would be "border" (non-native speaker).

By the way, those both bonus "albums" from the Studio Album Box Sets make each of its own a very strong album if you look at the songs. I put them on relatively often and they both have much more energy than the last couple of studio albums. Sometimes less is more.

Also I love the simple single album sleeve from the vinyl edition, no gatefold and over-doing stuff. Lyrics sheet and that's it.

But there is an incorrect description of the band's lineup for the song My Claim To Fame. Jules and Dusty mentioned it in the past.

It MIGHT be incorrect. Me and Jules have chatted about it a lot but at the end of the day it does come down to speculation.

That song was recorded way way waaaaaaay before MK started to record with the Nashville musicians and according to a MK interview in a magazine, Paul Carrack and Nick Lowe between others play in that song. The box states that the song was recorded by the same band that recorded the stp sessions. Guy confirmed that mistake in his forum.

I remember that story very well.

It's the same band that plays in the Golden demos.

Yes. So not speculation  :)

A couple of things here.

MK never said in the magazine interview (It was Record Collector magazine) what tracks the "UK band" played on. So, speculation :)

Also, the Golden Demos were stolen so obviously we don't know who played on them. Further speculation. :)

I think we need to be careful stating as fact things that we have speculated on, no matter who well founded the speculation is.

Didn't MK mentioned he just recorded a song about shipbuilding with the British band, because that kind of song should be recorded with British musicians?

The date of the interview fits with the date when the Swan Hunter documentary was broadcast, documentary that ended with the song "My claim to fame".

The dots are absolutely aligned, in my opinion.

Also that British band had a drummer called Bobby Irwin, and in the Golden demos you can listen MK talking with the drummer saying something like "what happened Bobby..."

More dots aligned.

I just wonder what the band set-up has to do with the lyrics of Let's See You.
