Always wondered why Mark used the words "nobody loves like an Irishman" in the song Donegan's Gone when Lonnie was born in Glasgow and brought up in England.  Then I see him here doing an Irish accent so I check his Wiki page and turns out I was right (he was brought up in Essex), however his Mother was Irish, but the song still doesn't make much sense.

Hard to believe he passed away only four years after that energetic performance.

I guess Mark used it the same way as he did with Return To Sender or Heartbreak Hotel and Love Me Tender etc. in Calling Elvis, the complete lyrics are built from quotations of Lonnie's lyrics. But I guess you know that of course.

I was a huge fan of Lonnie Donegan in the '50s and had most of his EPs and singles.   

I grew up knowing him as the King of skiffle music from an early age, before I could even tell you what that was!  Not my generation I suppose.

I guess for Mark all these songs mark an important time of his youth, the first influental stuff. 1958 he was nine years old. I liked Donegan's Gone from the first listen and still do, one of the favourites for me on a favourite album. I especially  love the drumming.

Funny. I didn't know Lonnie at all until I saw him at Ronnie Scott's in 1998. Much later I found out that some of his songs were my favourites when I was little. I remember that I kept singing "Does your chewing gum lose its flavour..." when I was maybe five, until it got on everybody's nerves. 🤣
