Might have something to do with St James' Park Newcastle being so named after St James Church and  St James's Park London being named after St James's Palace..

I thought it might be just a regional thing, but even in Geordieland they're unsure:

I liked this statement from a reader called Peter Sands: "St James's is grammatically correct, sounds better and was used when we used to win cups."
