What exactly does that phrase mean or refer to? I could not google anything. Is the song similar by the setting or even melodicaly ? Thanks! (Btw: Basil is one of my personal favourites!

It is Colin's and Bob's, referring to typical male first names of the period, 60s/70s.

To me, the (synth) strings are the same category as in Ticket To Heaven, meaningwise. I think this one is the meanest, most evil song on the album. False sweetness, fake feelings he sings about seems to be the moment they come up with this string  idea. If you read the lyrics you will see what I mean.

I would say it is sort of a spin-off song from Basil, Basil revisited so to say. The copy boy from Basil has grown up and became a hard cynical journalist. Melodywise it is not that similar, but the mood is the same.
I needed a few times before this one started to grow on me but it is very good indeed.

I also thought about a cynical journalist but in the end the character says he hates the black tie jobs so maybe it's just a journalist that knows he has to do that job in that way, doing his best, despite he hates doing that.

Yes, I think it is about how uncomfortable it feels to at the funeral as a journalist.

This was the first song I listened to other than the singles.
I think it’s my favourite MK “slower song”
I love it!! Can’t explain why but I just do.

Real strings would have been nice but we’d have had to wait another year….
