(5) Black tie jobs

Black Tie Jobs   2:57

So sorry for your trouble
Tell me to take a walk
And I would understand
Of course, it's good to talk
Here, take my handkerchief
No, I don't need it back
Please don't worry

So sorry for your trouble
And I was wondering
And I would understand
If you might have one to hand
If you had a photograph?
Of course, I'd bring it back
Please don't worry

And I wonder, if I stay in this
How hard-boiled will I become?
As hard-boiled as some
My friends in the newsroom
The Colins and Bobs
All done their black-tie jobs

I have to go, so sorry
Walking back to the car
And I can hear your sobs
I hate these black-tie jobs

"Black Tie Jobs is about his time at the "Evening Chronicle" in Newcastle. There was one Black tie hanging in the coffice in case a journalist had to go and write about a funeral"

I can't wait to hear it.
I know the way I can see by the moonlight
Clear as the day
Now come on woman, come follow me home

These were prized jobs for journalists - you had to urn it.

First I thought "Black tie jobs" was about the charity events where he had to wear a dinner jacket. He doesn't seem to like wearing ties in the first place.

It is said he left the Yorkshire evening post after writing about Jimi Hendrix's death, maybe the song is again biographical and it's about that?

Could be. I guess funerals is something no one wants to do, so it's the youngest reporters who have to go there.

Yes, in the studio recordings they were all spiffed up. Shame they didn't wear it on the tour, but it's probably way too uncomfortable.
Omg, I remember that last solo in "Setting me up", and then MK saying "Steve, can't you go any faster?" 🤣

Or the other one was "time to get the sports cars out." 🚗 💨

Oh yeah  ;D
Those were fantastic shows! I remember standing outside of Ronnie Scott's at three in the morning or something, after the show, trying to find a night bus which somehow never materialised, and MK was quietly standing there waiting for his taxi, with his guitar case. And all the fans very politely just left him alone because he'd said that he wasn't feeling too well and didn't want to sign stuff.

Great memory! Maybe even more memorable like this, leaving the maestro to have his own space.

He was probably suffering from sleep deprivation, with those builders starting to make a din at eight o'clock every the morning in his neighbour's house. They seemed to have no respect for the true artist... :-(

Great story.  Only Knopfler fans would be so polite!  ;D
