Apparantly Guy decided which tracks are bonus or boxset songs...
Or maybe he decided the whole order, a little language barrier mixed with a short answer from Guy to an extensive question.

I am surprised. Mark always decided which songs would be bonus tracks. If I understand correctly the bonus tracks are Guy's choice:

The Living End
Fat chance Dupree
Along the foreign coast
What I'll need
Nothing but rain

Or from vinyl?

Dolly the Salesman
Your leading man
Wrong 'un
Chess

I remember I was laughing back when Tracker or Down The Road was released, with this momentum going soon we'll see Guy sharing a writing credit with Mark on one of the songs on the next album. It's unbelievable how much power is in GF's hands now, even selecting the tracks and all. A joint credit is not too far-fetched at all. More tape, more tape, hail the tape!

Option one : Mark has the final go on them, so who cares who choosed as long as it is Mark approuved.
Otion two : Mark did not want to be bored with extra tracks selection and let someone else to do the job. As usual. The only change is that we know the name of the guy who did it.

25 new songs by Mark ?
Way too much not to let some in the bin.

8 to 10 songs and 45 minutes sounds like great numbrers to my ears  :think

...sounds like a definition of "I don't care". It's your supposed last album, what about bonus tracks? Who cares, put them however you want, on whatever medium you want. Half of the songs are bonus tracks? Who cares! Put them in any order. It reminds me of the famous story when Mark and Phil were recording the "On Every Street" outro riff for the whole day, and after that Mark decided the engineer would choose the best take. Mark is King!

Nobody said it would his last record, actually Guy said the opposite a couple of times.

If this record is deep in the same vain than this song, it's going to be tough for many here, lol

Seems that in terms of guitar player, we're going to listen very little stuff if all songs have playing similar to the two songs we already heard.

Was thinking this too.  As each album and tour passes, the more influence I sense Guy has on it, on the production of albums, credited musical director on tour etc. and the more boring they have become.

Maybe we forget about the official announcement of the album. If it is true, it is not good news for everyone who is waiting for a faster pace of MK :)

Mark Knopfler will release his tenth solo studio album on April 12th 2024 on his own British Grove label via EMI. Entitled One Deep River, it features 12 unhurriedly elegant new Knopfler songs, and his warm Geordie vocal tone, his poetic storytelling lyrics and deft, richly melodic guitar playing are all present and correct and as dazzling as ever.

One Deep River offers an unstoppable flow of future Knopfler classics, with their customarily learned lyrics and refined guitar textures. They draw on a lifetime of genre-crossing ingredients and influences in blues, folk, rock and beyond, and as usual, reveal their charms with unhurried grace and depth.

I just don't understand why some people can't accept Mark is a different person these days, he is never going to be the long guitar solos man ever again, so, why expect him to make songs like that? He is being true to himself in that way. I like the more laidback Mark now, we will always have those epic songs to listen to, now, it's about something different, and I praise him for that. It's lots of new Knopfler songs I always want, I am not bothered about the solo's anymore.
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

Mark is the boss and if one horse has to be beatten it's him.

Guy himself admitted that Mark's "bossiness" has mellowed down over the years, and he's not as fearless and perfectionist of a leader as he used to be. And so you get outsourced production, track selection, most certainly arranging in many cases, non-symmetric album covers and everything in between. Ageing sucks.

I'm wondering if everyone who just wants to hear new Mark Knopfler songs has listened to all the songs from the Local Hero musical?

Because if not, you have more than 20 great songs to discover.

Yes, they are not performed by MK and his band, and we don't have them in great quality, but even in bootleg form there are some fantastic MK songs there for you to enjoy.

Half of the songs of Local Hero musical are the typical musical songs with most of the cast singing, but the other half could be easily on any MK solo record and they would be instant favourites for some of you, I'm sure.

Two of my all times MK songs favourites are in that musical.
