With the naysayers on this one. Why restrict the audience to new music? By all means put it out on vinyl, but have it available digitally too. I would have bought the box set for the bonus tracks but I don't own a record player and I'm not about to purchase one. Are any of the bonus tracks from the box and/or The Boy available digitally?

Not yet, but I suppose that they will be at some point.

So your last two posts are basically moaning about the same thing?
Buy a turntable and the problem is solved.

My thoughts/ opinions. These aren’t directed at anyone individually so please don’t get upset.

Firstly, congrats to everyone who obtained a copy. Commiserations to those who didn’t but hopefully you can still get lucky. My experience from previous years is that selling prices skyrocket in the days after RSD and then go back to around RRP and sometimes even below as FOMO subsides, but obviously there is a risk in waiting.

I have mixed feelings seeing so many posts from people who have bought the record but have no means of playing it. I’m a bit of a collector myself so I get it, it’s just a shame for those who want to buy this to listen to but won’t be able to.

In terms of the people who have a friendly/crooked record store owner who let you get the record early or without going through the official process, you got the record and that’s the main thing.

BUT!

You also missed out.

You missed out on a fantastic experience. Myself and others in this thread had a wonderful experience queueing up, making new friends with fellow buyers, being supplied with coffees (Red Bull reps turned up at my store to give free drinks to everyone in the queue!) and having the feeling of anticipation rising as you got closer to the front.

And most of all, you missed out on the sheer joy when you get to the front of the queue, ask if they have any copies of The Boy by Mark Knopfler, and the assistant returned from a box with a copy in their hand. That was a wonderful moment, something truly wonderful that money can’t buy.

It's great you have had a wonderful experience and managed to snag a copy.
However it is 2024 so you shouldn't have to get up at the crack of dawn, queue for hours to buy a record.
The very least RSD should do is give you the ability to order records in advance so you can collect them on the day.Just imagine spending multiple hours travelling and queuing to buy a single record only for it to be unavailable due to scalpers.

An alternative and equally valid opinion. All I can tell you is that my experience of Record Store Day was overwhelming positive :)

I'm in it to win it, or them. :)

Not giving the store away but their service was excellent. I was still first in line around opening at noon enjoying myself and chatting with peers. And I started queuing a quarter before opening. ;D

One thing mustn't exclude the other.

Had to wait a couple of hours in the cold since before 6am, but it was all worth it when I got my hands on this beauty. Can’t wait to listen to it later this evening! Hopefully some decent flacs will turn up soon for those not so lucky (heck, sign me up as well—I’d love to have these songs on my phone).

Agree with Dusty, it was a great experience and glad I queued up. Especially as I got a copy. The queues around the vinyl shops in the Brighton lanes were insane. I never knew it was such a big event.

BUY A RECORD PLAYER! Simples!

I simply can't agree with that part in your answer, vinyle is no more a standard way to access music now.
Releasing new music that excluding way is just reaching the red line.

It wasn't, but it is again.

My 2 local stores didn’t get a copy at all

I'm also in the Netherlands (Friesland) and I went to 2 local stores as well.
One shop didn't get it at all and the other one had only one copy.
Luckily than one is mine and I already gave it a couple of spins and I'm enjoying it immensely.

I do hope these songs (and the other bonus songs) turn up on spotify or are going to be downloadable.
I imagine All Comers will be a great hit on the car stereo!

Even in the UK, Record store day is just for independent retailers - We only have one music shop in a town of 100,000 people! (HMV)
and they haven't got it and won't be getting it.  My nearest independent record shop is 35 miles away in Newcastle, so I wasn't going to get up early and join their queue. I'll have to find it somewhere else.
When you point your finger 'cause your plan fell through you've got 3 more fingers pointing back at you.
