Mark had a small, but well equipped, personal studio in Chiswick (before British Grove).
I think I briefly went there once and from vague memory there wasn't room for a drum kit.
I presume Mark mostly demoed songs on guitar. If any other instruments were required like bass or drums, Guy would play them off a keyboard.

Thank you, Chris.

And in case anyone is taking notes, Phil plays the final solo of ITILYTM in East Rutherford. Not sure whether this means that the number of solos varied, which would be very unusual for DS.

According to Wiki, Hell to Pay by Jeff Healy was recorded Jan-Feb 1990 which was before Chris joined up with DS I believe? Also, it was played on the NHB tour in 1990, so maybe the band worked on it for the Missing... album but didn't use it, and that formed the "demo"?

I always thought that the OES album is an extension of the NHB album.
Well, YTYLTM and WICTY have been performed during the NHB tour in 1990. So, in my mind, songs like Calling Elvis, Iron Hand, Ticket To Heaven, How Long, The Bug and Fade to Black were planned for the NHB album or even a second NHB album.

Maybe MK chaged his mind and choosed to change these songs a little bit and made them into the OES album.

Interesting point! It is noteworthy that two of the best songs (ITILYTM, When it Comes) on the NHB tour were not on the album, possibly deliberately saved for a later album

"proof" of that is that the NHB arrangement for Calling Elvis seems to be a mix between the original idea (that was a rockabilly) and the OES album version.
Another song that suffer a BIG change was Fade To Black. As mentioned by MK himself, this song was planned to be another rockabilly style.

Maybe the idea for a secong NHB album was a 'all original songs' instead the first one that was a 'cover album'

Maybe, Ed pushed Mark enought to transform it on the next Straits album.

Maybe, maybe, by contract, Mark needed to release another Straits album. He had the songs, so... why not?

Maybe... ;D

I was always curious that the song Your Own Sweet Way was on the Missing album... But it would also be good on the album on every street.

At the time Mark was involved with other's people dreams as he said himself.

He was partly living in the US and was doing business associated with a music publisher in Nashville.

The NHB started as a production team planned for the next Brendan Crocker solo album...

So this is why When it Comes to You became a John Anderson song, and I Think... became a Healey song  :think

Still, they recorded When it Comes for the album. It's hard to fathom why they prioritised obviously inferior tracks like Kingdom Come and My Parties over what could have been a minor classic (ITILYTM).

Agreed.

Also, what's the deal with the middle 8?

Are you telling me that NHB didn't born on a unpretentious friends reunion?  ;)
It's all about business after all.

The song Running On Down This Road reminds me (a lot) Kingdom Come.
With brings life to the Matchstickman comment about minor songs like Kingdom Come and My Parties.

But Kingdom Come was the B-side. Too bad Millionaire Blues is too.

Based on fellows comments, just for fun, i made my fictional OES album tracklist:

Calling Elvis
I Think I Love You Too Much
On Every Street
Heavy Fuel
Iron Hand
You And Your Friend
Your Own Sweet Way
When It Comes To You
The Bug
Planet Of New Orleans
