Behind With The Rent - acoustic version.

9.09.2009 The Prince’s Trust concert, Hurlingham Club London UK.

The verse has a completely different melody.

Fascinating stuff, thanks for sharing. Its another good example of MKs writing process and how things can chop and change. Its also interesting to note that parts of the melody from bwtr have their origins years earlier in song for the swans from the swanhunter documentary.

There's something I don't understand here. This recording is from 2009 and the song was released in 2007. How can MK be playing a pre-version of the song 2 years after its release?
There must be a mistake in the dates, this recording has to predate the album release or even the recording of that album.

Mark could never remember the first version of Sultans he composed in open tuning, I don't see how he could remember early stages of a recorded song and be able to play it

Yes it's true. A bit strange. But the date is real. Before the show, Mark performed a three track acoustic set: "Behind With the Rent," Secondary Waltz" and "Marbletown" which were no part of the broadcast.

I prefer this version more than album one TBH.

If I'm not mistaken, I think he showcased the writing process here.

Sounds like a Martin 000 to me, the same he used to play "Get Lucky" on this show. National sounds like a banjo besides rocking an odd tuning which is not present in this arrangement. The acoustic of the room I think plays a trick with the ear when it sounds fuller and deeper.

Yeah he probably did, there is no other explanation
still I'm surprised he remembered enough that he could play it

At my own small level I do compose music and before I call a song finished there are usually up to 3 or 4 pre versions and when I happen to listen to one of those earlier versions of a song it's like I discover something I have no memories of ever having created, it can be spooky at times.

I think Mark just has a musical 'box if bits' lying around. Short tunes, ostinatos, chord progressions, unfinished songs, etc that he can dip into when in need of inspiration. I can think of numerous bits and pieces that have been reused and repurposed. Off the top of my head, PI outtro on news, Secondary Waltz and its several iterations, No can do riff, I'm sure there are more examples....

The first version of "Secondary Waltz" always seemed more interesting to me:) But I understand Mark wanted a waltz, not a rock song:)

The first version of Secondary waltz is unknown for us, as it looks is a song that had its firsts steps during the BIA period, I remember an interview of that year's where it is mentioned.

We are talking about this version right?

It’s good but I’m so glad he rewrote it as it’s a masterpiece on the KTGC album.

Yes, but I was thinking about the version we know from Golden Demos.
