Things Not Often Talked About
« on: June 09, 2023, 08:56:21 AM »
I have mostly been disappointed with people who interview Mark as they stick to the usual questions about Sultans of Swing, Money For Nothing etc, things he has talked about over and over again, so, with the news that Mark has contributed to a new documentary about Wily Deville, I was wondering what else about Mark's life, musical or otherwise have you either never heard him talk about, or heard him rarely talk about, here are a few of mine, minus Wily Deville, who I would have mentioned.

Comfort & Joy soundtrack, music for the Royal Wedding, Sir George Martin, Van Morrison, Cliff Richard, Phil Lynott, Holly Beth Vincent, his Hungarian heritage, the tour with Eric Clapton and Elton John, Randy Newman, Gerry Rafferty, J.J. Cale. His 1st wife, working as a lecturer, Johhny Cash playing The Next Time I'm in Town and adding a verse, Vince Gill, Playing with Paul McCartney.

These are just some things I thought of, there are bound to be more.
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

Some of them we have talked about more than others, I seem to recall a fair bit of discission about Holly Beth on here.

I think to be fair MK has not really discussed his Hungarian heritage, unlike, say his Geordie and Scots roots.

I was not referring to us talking about these subjects, I was referring to Mark himself talking about them.

Mark Lawson asked MK about playing in Hungary, and he said it wasn't particularly important to him, but acknowledged the irony that they kicked out his dad and now "make sandwiches" for him. Also, Lawson asked about Jewish roots as well, and Mark said he visited a synagogue 2 times in his life, for his accountant's wedding.

Sorry, gotcha.

Great list. Personally, I'm not interested in his private life in the slightest, so Holly Beth Vincent and 1st wife is out of the question, but everything else is pretty cool.

I think Mark's best stories are the ones about working with other musicians, or about his songs. Because he basically met all his heroes, and then some!

Correct, no Holly Beth, no R&J, and maybe no future for DS.

I think Mark can easily diverge the answer to this question to the fact that adverse circumstances could or even should lead to being creative, and how breaking up with somebody can lead to creating songs like Romeo. So I doubt we can get any new information there. The fact is Mark certainly turned being in dire straits into a good life for him.

Do I remember correctly that Romeo and Juliet has been on every tour since 1980? And then MK solo as well?

It's a concert classic :)

Yup, I believe it was played more frequently than even Sultans Of Swing. Fan favourite, classic, timeless song, ultimate Knopfler masterpiece.

yes indeed, Romeo & Juliet was played more than Sultans, because it was played in 2006 and 2019 when Sultans wasn't played, and also in all gigs in 2013, while Sultans was sometimes ommissed
of course Sultans was played during 2 years before Romeo, but I don't think it was enough to reach the amount of times Romeo was played

Romeo wasn't played only during NHB tours and Bob Dylan tours
