A conference about BIA
« on: March 13, 2023, 10:21:39 PM »
Yesterday, I did a conference about the BIA album.

it was in Lyon during an exhibition about hi-fi sound. I was asked to talk about the album and bring my guitars.

we listened to different masters of the title track : the Abbey road recent one (heavily compressed), the MoFi one (claimed to be the best one by audio experts), and moreover a first copy of the master !

funnily, the first DDD album sounds the greatest on a tape !  ;D

I talked about common facts, as the audience was not only DS/MK fans, but people looking for hi-fi equipments.
It was a little bit tricky, to talk, answer questions, and playing few notes on guitar at the same time
I ruined the Romeo arpeggios... :disbelief

but a nice experience anyway  :)

as usual, my article is in french, but deepl can help you

Good work. For me, that original West Germany CD is still reference quality audio.

I was selling some speakers last week and I used it as a demonstration for the potential buyer.

They agreed to buy one minute into MFN :)

Yes indeed the original 85 CD is better than the 96 remaster edition

The 1985 mastering is the way to go IMHO.

That said if I had to use one DS record for demonstration I find OES sound quality better.

yes indeed, we talked about OES after the conference
but BIA is much more famous of course and has a kind of "cult" status that OES doesn't have
the goal was to talk about a famous album that would be suitable for an audio exhibition, and the fact that the release of the Atmos version was announced around the same time gave another argument to choose it

To be honest, I don't think he's made a bad sounding album. MAYBE Making Movies isn't quite as "audiophile" as the others but still sounds great.

I use MFN whenever I am testing out a new piece of equipment for the first time. I think that build up at the start really shows off dynamics then the track after that has a great balance across the frequencies. I think I read somewhere that it is a favourite of sound techs when setting up a PA for a live show for this reason.
