I remember when I bought my firt electric guitar at my favourite music store in Montpellier, I used to play sax then.
The shop assistant was all about a french jazz guitarist he had seen in concert the day before (Sylvain Luc), he was in awe of his playing and when I mentionned I loved MK's music to him (because I was trying a strat replica which "had to be red") he compared MK's playing to cat piss,"c'est du pipi de chat" was his exact sentence.
that was in 1997, I was only 16 or so but I immediatly got the intuition he wouldn't have been as contemptuous had I mentionned Jimmy Page or Gilmour who are arguably in the same league. Knopfler has this kind of detractors who make him pass for a fraud just because it is easy to undermine him.

Lol, some people are so rude. Like this comment underneath Beato's video: "Sorry but Dire Straits are totally overrated. Very good musicians but what they made of that talent was mediocre. Radio hits and success don’t equal greatness"

I mean what was he thinking when he wrote this? If MK is mediocre, then show me who's genius then!

By the way, Beato's video in a couple of days got quarter million views, 10 thousand likes and 1 thousand comments despite the fact he's only shared one story and showed a couple of licks from the song, all the rest was ads and calling names. He could really pick a better song/topic about MK assuming a lot of people will watch it, but it's yet another Sultans appreciation fest. How amazing is that.

Mark is not underrated by people in the know, even Satriani likes Mark's playing and they have next to nothing in style similarities. You don't get admired by Chet Atkins if you are underrated, as has been said, it's that he is overlooked more than the like's of Clapton and Gilmour, and even underappreciated, but, I know I go on about Mike Oldfield a lot, he is the guitarist that is underrated, overlooked and underappreciated way more than Mark.
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

If there’s an overrated guitarist in this topic it’s Page imo. Led Zeppelin too. Not a popular opinion but I can’t get through any of their songs let alone a full album.

Thumbs up from me. Never really understood their popularity. I know JP was a well regarded session man long before LZ but evidence suggests that he ruined his talent through drink and drugs.

I think ultimately deep down that's probably what puts me off them.

It seems overrated and underrated are just words used by people to say I don't like or I like.

Mark knopfler may be underrated for us in amit obviously because we love his playing and would like him to be on every radio but if you ask a lot of virtuoso and top players they all have a high opinion regarding his influence, I read in an interview how especially Gilmour held MK in high regard, but as someone said Satriani too had a good word about his last record. Chet Atkins said he was one of the great even if he (MK) didn't think that himself.
And Rolling Stones (the magazine)  ranked him 44th greatest guitarist if I remember correctly. The panel of voters were known guitarists.

I don’t mean he’s not a great player, as you said he once was a very prolific session musician and if you’re not good you don’t get called in for work. I just think that in his case the whole genius thing is more about the aura than the playing itself.

I agree. I've never heard anything that made me sit up and go wow, with the hairs on my neck standing up.

Has anyone seen this?

I thought it was quite interesting though quite a bit of the tech stuff is a bit beyond me.

Sure! With Rick, it's bound to get too technical, whether it's a song or a studio tour, but it's funny how everybody bombarded his Instagram live stream with comments that 20 minutes drive from Abbey Road there is this interesting studio... Which is even crazier than Abbey Road, and owned by one famous musician, he might want to check it out. Rick never responded, which can mean he did it, or at least plans to do it.

When I made my recreation of that whole performance almost 10 years ago, I thought I'll get some views, but in the end, I got even less than the guy merely reacting to the original :smack

Haha, thank you! I could make it better with proper pants instead of jeans though. But I found two different coats.

That's my trusty 1997 Gibson Advanced Jumbo reissue, I still use it today (when in Russia). I deliberately used a piezo pickup to replicate the original live sound, it also made it possible for me to ditch headphones and play along to the performance, hence replicating everything even down to them both rushing and dragging.
