You sure?

never heard of that. I bet Guy's response is about Romeo

Mark said in an interview that he plays the Hank Marvin style with the Jurassic strat on You don't know you're born

of course, Richard has the same kind of sound on several songs but it doesn't proove that he plays this solo

the sound on that song is the same as on Our shangri-La, Everybody pays etc.. and it's Mark for sure

I totally believe you, even if Dusty confirms i surrender  ;) I always thought it was Richard who played this solo, probably since i saw that comment from Guy in 2008. I like the solo, i fooled myself for 15 years then  :lol

"Broken Bones" is another song that Richard played lead guitar, isn't it?
At least I can remember seeing him play lead on the Tracker Tour, but I don't know if he played lead on the album as well.
in studio it only can be Mark as he is alone on guitars on this album

I recall MK talking about "you don't know you're born" and telling he wanted to play a solo like Hank Marvin.

He played the same solo, note by note, on Jimmy Webb 's "by the time I got to Phoenix"

Minute 2.53

Total different solo but indeed, its the same style.

Note by note, is the same solo, but slower.
You might get lucky, now and then

I know what Dutchessy is saying, it's not EXACTLY note for note, but it's very, very, very similar :)

The Ragpicker’s Dream album has an interview with Mark somewhere where he talks about each of the songs and the approach they took. I can’t find it online for the life of me though. It may mention Richard’s involvement on the song in question.

From the official MK website, the link to The Ragpicker's Dream movie is not available :(

But it's here:

Ah thanks.
I was referring to a written breakdown by MK, which I have now found.

No mention of Richard’s solo but interesting article.

Does anyone have that Jonnie Walker show recording? I think I have it on minidisc somewhere but no way of playing it!

are you sure it's Mark who is playing the guitar ?
isn't it Glenn Campbell as credited ?

in this album, Mark is only credited on Highwayman : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_Across_the_River

maybe it's an omission ?

The official MK website only gives Highwayman. The Long Road Mark Knopfler Sessions website gives two titles Highwayman and By The Time I Get To Phoenix. But in an interview with the Polish magazine "Teraz Rock" Mark talks about By The Time I Get To Phoenix. He says he was invited by Jimmy Webb to record this song.

The collaborations credited are the cosingers in every song, in that specific song is credited Glenn Campbell as he sings the duo, but MK also plays the guitar solo.

Mk is credited in the song he sings with Jimmy.

Looking at the thread title in a slightly different way, one song that stands out as lacking lead guitar from the Dire Straits era is Portobello Belle, which I think is the only song from the first two albums with the original four man line up which doesn't feature any true 'lead' guitar parts. I assume Mark plays the resonator guitar on this track, so he is playing the main guitar part in a strict sense, but he doesn't play a solo or even any fills so it is essentially a rhythm part throughout the song. I don't think Wild West End from the first album has a guitar solo either but it does have Mark playing lead fills throughout the track so the difference is not as noticeable. Portobello Belle, on the other hand, is unique in its era for lacking prominent lead guitar parts.
I got shot off my horse, so what I'm up again...
