Knopfler songs without MK on lead guitar
« on: February 02, 2023, 04:35:26 PM »
Summer of love is one. But, is it the only one?

I don't listen to all his songs equally often, so if I missed something "obvious", bear with me :)

Good question. I was thinking All That Matters which is predominantly Richard on his dobro but from memory MK has a small acoustic solo in there as well.

Do I remember correctly? In When You Leave, Mark didn't play guitar.

Yes, you do. Your memory is still working very well, Robson.  ;)
In Episode 08/British Grove Broadcasts 2020 Mark talked about it that he didn't need to play the guitar but Richard did.

Just found the transcript in my junkyard  ;D

Episode 8 / British Broadcasts – Host: Mark Knopfler

When You Leave – Mark Knopfler
Down The Road Wherever (2018)

And this next song is from the Down The Road Wherever album made by yours truly. And in fact, I seem to remember that I didn’t need to play the guitar on it –Richard was already manning an acoustic at the time and we had the wonderful Tom Walsh on trumpet, and I must have figured that I didn’t need a job. So the song – “When You Leave.”
I can’t really remember many tracks where I haven’t played the guitar when I’ve been in the studio, but that was one. So with Richard manning guitar, I’m in a pretty good position and with the pianist in my band – one Jim Cox from Long Beach.

Private Dancer LOL

But seriously... Not many songs, huh? Makes you think about how big of an influence MK has on his own songs. People underestimate that I think.

P.S. Also Wild West End Live 1985/86

Not his song, but I think it’s Richard on Love And Happiness.

The main riff on Lets See You?

- Wag the dog live in 2001 : Mike Henderson lead
- On every street : Paul Franklin lead in studio and live 91-92, and Nigel Hitchcock live on later tours
- Two young lovers. Hal lead
- Portobello belle live 80-81. Hal lead

It's not on Real Live Roadrunning :)

Joking, good catch, I haven't watched or listened to that release for years, must rectify that.
