I think it was a great opener and the best choice from BIA.
I don't find the song depressing but the album does have an overt theme of sadness so it's not surprising if anyone does.
DS had really good openers in DTTW and OUATITW and Ride is almost as good.I wasn't a fan of Calling Elvis opening but then it came from their weakest album so choices from that were limited.
Of his solo tours I was particularly fond of Border Reiver and What It Is as openers so I guess MK has gotten it right about half the time when opening the show :)

True, the album is low-key (mostly) and has a sad, wistful tone – depressing was a poor word choice – but that's hardly a good basis for a whole show  ;D  In my opinion, songs like RATR work really well mid-show, when you want to take things down a notch.

I think Ride allowed them to set the atmosphere in the hall with the lights and synths, then flute followed by the full band and Mark walking out into the limelight as the song sprung into life.  It also provided a chance for Mark and the band to warm up with some solos.  In that sense it worked well, but I get the point that it wasn't exactly upbeat.

I think Calling Elvis was great. In 1991/92 and 2001.

I still don't really like RATR, both studio or live version, but the way they used it to open the show did the job IMHO.

Of course, if Mark had wanted a catchier start like they will do in 91/92, MFN or WOL would have been perfect choice.

I agree that it’s an odd choice to open with.

I always think you should open with something upbeat to get the crowd going.

Walk of Life would have been my choice in 85.

to my taste, 96 versions were the best ones, although not openers

Walk of Life would have been my choice in 85.

it has been only once for Mandela gig in 88

I like the way RATR opened the shows : ambient, almost mystery atmopshere... and then suddenly the guitar comes in
it was the same thing with Once upon a time : smooth melody on keyboard, ambient-cinematographic music, and then Mark cames in with his guitar
and it was the same thing with Waterline : calm pace, sounds of the flaghorn, and then... full band with energetic rhythm
well you can see that Mark liked that way to open the shows
He did the same with Border reiver : calm celtic music before the whole band came in

I like when music "build's up"

he did almost the same on the ANIL show with celtic instruments playing before the start of Darling Pretty, like on the album.
But on the rest of the tour, the song started imediately with Richard's acoustic guitar

great. thanks for sharing

but in the same time, Pink Floyd has published officially 18 (yes 18 !) shows from their 1972 tour...  ::) ::)

https://www.francetvinfo.fr/culture/musique/rock/pink-floyd-publie-sans-prevenir-18-concerts-inedits-de-1972-epoque-the-dark-side-of-the-moon_5558466.html

These are published for copyright extension, and prevent the recording from entering the public domain

It doesn't matter why these are released, is important that are released!

I would be happy if for legal reasons some DS concerts have to be released. Those would be much welcomed.
no you would not if they would handle it the same way PF did, in fact there are far better versions in fans hands of these Floyd shows then what they decided to "release" it is a disgrace.
any Knopfler, Floyd or Dylan will do....

They did it right. They were posted for copyright extension so they had to find the dirtiest versions to make them useless.

This is great, sound is now in mono but a bit more muffled than the last one.

Includes MFN, BIA and the short version of Tunnel of Love.  Who is the geezer with Alan playing keyboards in Brothers in Arms during his solo??

Man, if I never hear MFN again, I will not cry. And this version in particular is pure crap to my ears, and no I'm not talking about the audio quality.
