Toe The Line by John Illsley
« on: December 10, 2021, 11:23:04 PM »
This song by John Illsley popped up in my YT feed.
Reminds me very much of the good old DS sound. Great track and he can surely play other guitars than bass in my opinion.

What do you think ?
Its an old track from 2010 but timeless just as DS was and MK still is.
Cheers Peter

The whole album is great. Bought it at the time and coincidentally listened to it very recently. Toe the line is indeed a very Straits-ish song but it's not the only one in the album.

The drummer is kinda cool too, I like the way he plays and how he sounds.

Buy it if you can, well worth some money!

All John's recent album are worth buying, good stuff.
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

I like the song and the playing is nice too. You can’t help but admire his bravery in playing guitar as people are only ever going to compare him to Mark.
His style (in this song at least) feels quite Robbie Macintosh to me.

Great little album of his that. Go see him Live if you get an opportunity - amazing Live and very sociable afterwards.....

I’ve seen him play with blues band a couple of times and chatted to him briefly. He played 20 flight rock during soundcheck as someone kept jokingly shouting it out. II wish I had asked him to play the 2000 miles riff in hindsight. My favourite Christmas song by far and of course, he wrote the guitar part.

It's a most beautiful riff indeed. From Wikipedia..

While many people believe the song's title and lyrics refer to two long-distance lovers who miss each other over the holidays, it was actually written for James Honeyman-Scott, the group's original guitarist, who died the year before the song was released. "Robbie McIntosh plays beautifully on '2000 Miles'," Hynde recalled. "Anything to avoid listening to my voice and my stupid words."

The song frequently reappears in the UK Charts around Christmas time staying in the charts for a few weeks over the Christmas period.

Before I get a reputation of taking every thread off track, I will briefly mention that I happily listen to it all year round. It’s a brill song. Christie’s voice is fab too.

Following this link today I note that John has a new album coming out in March next year! 'V111' is the title and there is one track (nice) you can listen to on iTunes! Release date is four months away!! Why do these releases take so long to release? God knows when MK's new one will be out - 2024??

You might get lucky, now and then

I still think Autumm 2022 could be a date, as they have recordings scheduled in february and probably finished by March, then comping, mixing, mastering, if they have all scheduled, it might be possible, but maybe it's more likely to Early - Spring 2023 if there is something that interrump the process.
