Favourite Tour Versions?
« on: November 12, 2021, 09:40:29 PM »
A thread for stating your favourite versions of songs by tour of particular songs.

For example, I watched Alchemy recently and I’m currently watching the great new version of Wembley 85.

Expresso Love was much better on Alchemy. Too much sax in 85.

But Private Investigations is great in 85, really powerful.

What say you?

Maybe it's worth choosing your favorite versions (concert) chronologically.

30th January, 1978 Live In Leeds
April 19, 1978 Live In Chester sounds good
Of course Live At The BBC.
I know the way I can see by the moonlight

Good thread Dusty...

Last night we watched the 'Live in Sydney 1986' and to be honest there are a few stand out versions I really enjoy....

*Ride across the River- Outrageous and astonishing!
*Industrial Disease - just amazing and rockin'
*So Far Away - Calypso version - Nuff said!!!
*Walk of Life - lovely to hear MK's Tele 'Riff' which is so much louder than the rest of the band
*Two young Lovers' - love the opening 'riff' exchange with Jack and jack calling MK a 'F****ing animal' whilst MK tries to bite a broken nail!!
*Tunnel of Love' - such a moving end solo even with a clearly tired MK.....
* Mark Knopfler - NOT just a hobby, but a way of life!

* Owner of Two Fender 'Mark Knopfler' Signature Series Stratocaster's (SE00616 & SE03805) both with signed Fender labels after meeting MK at Bridport, Dorset UK on the 27/09/2013!

Ride Across the River : yes this is totally badass
Private Investigations : OES tour versions surprisingly for me
Single Handed Sailor : Making Movies Tour
Romeo and Juliet : Mandela or 1991 OES tour before it got merged into Heavy Fuel . Early versions are good too
Portobello Belle : Making Movies tour
Money for Nothing: Live in 85
BIA : not a tour version but Mandela is best and has the best of BIA and OES versions in it
Telegraph Road : love over gold tour versions
Tunnel of Love : Live in 85
Wild West End : 1979 versions are very nice, BIA versions are too overdone
Sultans : love over gold BIA and OES versions all stand up but prefer Terry's drumming

Ride Across The River was only played on the BIA tour so it can't be compared to any other tour version like this thread implies?

I always found that Private Investigations from 1991/1992 was superior to the BIA tour. It had the right portion of synth and atmospheric keyboard sounds, the version on OTN is a real gem and the best track on the album for me.

I agree about Expresso Love. Best version on Alchemy.

Sultans was the best for me in 1996. I loved the really long version and Jim's part in it. Sultans from 2001 on was just something to forget, getting worse and more and more cringeful from tour to tour.

Yes, Private Investigations in 1991/1992 was brilliant. And I also think that the pedal steel was a good addition to Romeo and Juliet.

About Calling Elvis, I think it's very interesting that there was never the "standard" live version. 1991 was worked out and extended to be a big opener and to introduce Danny, the NHB versions were stripped down, very jazzy and cool, 1996 again a totally other original and fresh style. 2001 very much  changed again, now being very boring, as an opener at least, being followed by Walk of Life  :smack. It seems MK was never really sure about the identity of this song. Or he saw it as an universal piece of music only connected by lyrics and solo. To answer the topic, I liked the 1996 version the most because of its energy, key change and phantastic intro coming from Je Suis Desolé. Very good, as everything in 1996.

For Sultans I like OES versions a lot, nice blend of sax and guitar.
I don't like 4 piece versions much, and it's true that over the years some versions were quite bad, but with exceptions. Listen to Sion 2015, almost as good as 2001 versions...

I like OTN version a lot, but it is a bit slow compared to Wembley 85, totally badass ! :)
I really think that Wembley 85 is a hell of a concert, Mark on his cusp. A bit too much of cheesy synth maybe, but I love cheese ;)

For TOL I prefer Wembley 85 to Alchemy, but I prefer Alchemy to Sidney 86.
In general I much prefer Wembley to Sidney, so much fresher, by the end of the tour they were completely washed up, and it shows (and sounds).

Re the calypso SFA.

Everyone loves it, but is it really the best version?

Do we not just like it because it’s a novelty?

If the BiA album had opened with it we would have all said what the hell is this?!

For me, the best SFA versions were during the Get Lucky Tour. Great energy as always during that tour.

Agree that the 2010 version was great but if you're asking me, the 2006 was even better. I remember the one in Paris was so enjoyable -- band included -- (SamGolden and I we were front row that day) and the DVD version is an absolute killer. Cant' beat it.

The 2002 version is cool too, same mood.

SFA from Liverpool 2013 was great with an extended part from 4.30.
