I'm not a very big fan of brass (and wood) wind instruments but I have to say that I love any single note of them on DTRW.

And it looks they are going to be back, as Guy insist on saying ALL THE BAND when he talks about February sessions.

Horns are great when used properly, for instance, the horn section is perfect for this type of music:

Mark is of course famous for overusing some instruments in the past (putting pedal steel in everything on OES tour, for instance, then folk guys, now brass section), so I think we should get used to the horns by now lol.

I actually like the pedal steel, and think Paul Franklin was a great fit for both Dire Straits and Mark solo, the folk guys addition are ok, but the Brass for me is just not Mark!!!

I totally agree with you!  :clap For me Mark Knopfler is a rock musician influenced by folk, country and blues and I don't want him to sound like a big band leader. Sorry, Mark!  ;)
This is all the heaven we've got, right here where we are in our Shangri-La.

I'm not a brass fan either, but I don't mind some sax in moderation, which, I believe is actually woodwind - Chris White played sax in DS days.   The trumpet was a big turn-off for me on the last tour - too raspy!

I agree Val, everything Chris White did was great for the songs, but what we have now is not working, for me anyway. I always love the interplay between Paul Franklin and Mark on You and Your Friend, plus his Walk of Life solo is always great.
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

I guess that the good thing about the album you’re voting for remaining in (Golden Heart for me), is that you don’t struggle with the next one to vote off.

Tracker is a bit of a let down after the opening track. If it was all as good as LAJADAS it would be a fab album.
RPD is a good album for songs that are good but better live (WAM, Marbletown.) How I wish that Fare Thee Well Northumberland was played live as I reckon it could be an awesome track live.

A difficulty for me is that each of his albums is a little different and has its own flavour and musical focus.
This makes it quite difficult for me to "eliminate" one over the other, because they all have different approaches.
Of course I have favorites.
I wonder if some of you have similar feelings/problems when having to decide which album goes next?

It is difficult, because Mark's albums are made to such a high standard.

I should think so…..they certainly take their time over them!
