In 2000 Sailing to Philadelphia had "Do America" on the USA release and "Matinee" on the UK release.

I know this is a very old thread but I wanted to ask, specially to our British forumers...

Does this song has any meaning that I cant get?

Everybody wants their time in the sun...

I think that the meaning is about enjoying life.    We like to be outdoors in a sunny day.   The fresh air, blue sky, and warm sun make us feel good.   That is the literal meaning.    "Time in the sun" is a metaphor for being in a good place, when you are happy, when life is going well, when people appreciate you and recognize your worth as a person.

Lol, my 2 yr old post here is almost exactly the same as my recent post on the new Amazon bonus song - glad to see I'm consistent!

Try Try Try No Cigar is not exactly how I know it here in California, but it probably means about the same.    Here it is "Nice try, but no cigar."    It means you tried hard, but nothing came of it.    You did what you could, but no reward.

Thank you, IrisRose, for explaining!

So the song could indeed could be as dull and lo-fi as I had the impression on the first sight!  :lol :lol

Thank you IrisRose, I always thought it has something to do with his effort of no-smoking anymore ;D . I read he was a heavy smoker some times ago ... Great forum, where I can improve my english, too  :)

From my point of view, it's clearly about success, alas "time in the sun". The cigar mentioned would be missing out on getting to smoke the winner's cigar when one has achieved whatever one has set out to do. But it's a dark song really, since no one will get his/her time in the sun wherever the song takes place since there are no chances (getting "no ball" or something like that). One interpretation of this would be from a working class perspective, though it's really open.

The backing vocals are done by the guys themselves. It's on the DVD (recording backing vocals). ;)

I agree that the backing vocals are by the guys in the band but I thought the video was just playback, no?

No playback.

So it was recorded live then?  Sorry, but my initial post was poor english and may have led to some confusion. :-[
