Yes, that's a good story, though it's a testament to how fragile this medium is. I can't imagine shipping an LP record if that's not in a bulletproof case. Don't want to start a (yet another) war on formats here, just thinking... You can damage it in production, you can damage it while shipping, then again you damage it every time you listen to it, you can't store it wherever you want. Too much hussle for me.

The flip side is, I have lots or records from the 1950s which are in mint condition and sound great :)

Where will downloads be in 70s years time?  ;)

It's really funny, I actually still possess some of the ancient mp3s and WAVs from my childhood, files which travelled from many computers and hard drives. To me, it evokes the same emotions. I mean meeting the old files, even though it's technically just ones and zeroes. By the way, I'm happy to be born exactly at the time when cassettes were still popular in my childhood, I played a lot of cassettes, and I played a lot of vinyl actually, I listened to a lot of radio, and when a lot of CDs, to the point where last time I played anything of those was more than 10 years ago... In my university of film and television, we even edited some movies on old-school editing machines, where you cut the tape with the blade, and then re-attach it with some Scotch tape, it was awesome! All analogue.

Every medium is great and I love it. As long as there is some good stuff on it, I'm in!

Ha ha, vinyl is certainly a flawed medium, but when when it is right then it is hard to beat. I don’t knock any medium as they all have pros and cons, while at the same time giving pleasure. I also have MKs music on CD but it does lend itself to vinyl, so that’s reserved for when I’ve got time to to relax back and listen properly.

I’ve always found that wear isn’t really a problem with good and well set-up playback equipment. I have albums that I bought in the 1980’s that still sound wonderful, and take heart in having my grandfathers Edison wax cylinders that still play on the phonograph at over 100 years and will never need a software upgrade!

I’d better shut up before this goes really off-thread  ;D

Hello Harry. Yes you are right with your opinion in vintage vinyl records. :thumbsup
I also own thausands of vinyls-, LP-Albums, Singles, Maxi-Singles, 78-rpm-records from 1896 upwards, and some Edison-cylinders, too. It is also very thrilling to me, to play such old records, which are more than 100 years old.
The old mono-records by The Shadows, are brilliant produced and they are sounding excellent on todays hi-fi-systems. From the 1950s on the vinyl-record-technology was on an high level.
But back to the MK and DS Vinyl-stuff. I own the vintage DS records in various versions, UK, Germany, USA, Japan and some exotic countries. But that is another obsession by myself and for my private collection.
The rate of mistakes in producing a vinyl-record was very high in the past by GZ-Media pressing-plant. The records were faulty produced, with some mistakes, like warps, scratches, bad centered records and so on. But today, they have learned from the past, and the rate of production-mistakes is getting lower. To my opinion the records from the 1950- 1980 are most well produced ones.

CDs tend to drop in price, until they go out of print, then they rise again…

It's a pity they didn't think about the Mexican version of What It Is.

Maybe one day DS box. Plus a collection of studio b-sides, plus live :)

Sultans Of Swing - french edition single. Studio version of Sultans of swing which is different from the version that can be found on the abum Dire Straits.
Eastbound Train live
Real Girl live
Me And My Friends live
Making Movies live
What's The Matter Baby? live
Twisting By The Pool
Two Young Lovers
If I Had You
Posters, Badges, Stickers And T-Shirts
Think I Love You Too Much live
Millionaire Blues
Kingdom Come

There would be a lucky thirteen. But I know my dreams are too ambitious :)

ps. I also remember about Private Dancer :)

I would prefer studios versions of Real Girl and eastbound train rather than live versions
and all demos would be my graal

To Robeson and JF.
Yes, very good thoughts. I also dream of a special collection of unreleased studio and live-stuff, compiled as a fine vinyl-box-set. I also like various studio-versions of known songs, like some single, radio-edits, or extended versions of songs, too.
There is an USA-Promotional-12-inch record with three MFN versions included: LP-Version with 7:04min, Single-Edit with 4:28min and edited short version with 4:05min. Something like that, but all included on a box-set. Or tracks like Why Worry (instrumental segment) and others.

to me, the differents edit versions of the same song doesn't bring anything for me.
all I want is the longest edit which includes all the others

for example, on my STP tracklist on my travel player, I put WII mexican version and STP from the PI compilation. Thus, I have the "largest" version of each song, and personnally, I don't see interest to have smaller cut versions.
imho of course  :)

Exactly! The Mexican version of What It Is should be in the box. But who remembers that?

Why Sailing To Philadelphia from PI compilation? Is it longer too? I have to check because I may have forgotten about it
