I prefer the shorter version. The extra verse sounds creepy.

Yeah, I get that....

Back to What it is and the extra verse on the Mexican release, I'm curious as to why the Mexicans were lucky enough to warrant having the extended version?
Just a mistake by the record company somewhere along the line.

Huge mistake in my books, I know it's only one verse but once you've heard it, the 'standard' album version just isn't the same!!

 :thumbsup

Yes, after the extended version I know exactly where they cut the "standard" one. I love the full version so much, never listen to the short one...

No, I hardly listen to the 'shorter' version now either well apart from the Live 'shorter' version.....ooooh I wonder if he ever played the extra verse Live???

In fact, there is a bootleg from 2001- London 2001 (4th June 2001), Mark Knopfler mix up the lyrics of What it is a bit. He sings parts of the extra verse, which can be found on the Mexican promo single.
Let's go down to the waterline!

Really! At this concert, William Topley sang in Sailing To Philadelphia
I know the way I can see by the moonlight
Clear as the day
Now come on woman, come follow me home

I was at this concert!  I don't really remember much about it - we were a long way from the stage and a pair of binoculars would have been very useful!   I do remember William Topley and I think Dorrie Jackson was with him too.

Actually, it wasn't the best experience I have had of an MK concert, mainly because I felt disconnected due to being so far away from the stage and also Mike Henderson was just far too loud, so much so that I could hardly hear MKs guitar at times and I was desperate to hear him!

Maybe a question for Guy why the longer version only was released on a promo cd and didn’t  made the regular StP album.

The b sides together is great fun to listen.

If they would do that with the bonus tracks from the other albums it would also a great compilation.

Get lucky:
1. Early Bird
2. Time in the sun
3. Pulling Down The Ride
4. Home Boy
5. Good As Gold

Privateering:
6. Occupation blues
7. River of grog
8. Follow the ribbon
9. A perfect song

Tracker
10. .38 Special
11. My Heart Has Never Changed
12. Terminal Of Tribute To
13. Heart Of Oak
15. Time Will End All
16. Oklahoma Ponies
17. Hot Dog

Down the Road wherever:
18. Every Heart in the Room
19. Rear View Mirror
20. Drovers’ Road
21. Don’t Suck Me In
22. Sky And Water
23. Pale Imitation
24. Back in the day (?? Never released only mentioned in the tour book)

Found this on Guy’s forum:

Dear doctor! I just listened to an extended version of What It Is from some kinda Mexican promo. The song had got an extra verse, which is very nice! But, how come it never made it to the album? And.., are there any other verses or parts of lyrics scraped from songs? Thanks!

Yes, it was edited..there were a LOT of verses. So many I lost count. It was cut simply because Mark thought it too long for the record.

I read somewhere that WII was at one time going to be a version not dissimilar in length to 'Telegraph Road'!! And again like Guy has put MK deemed it too long and so cut the majority of verses out.....

I would love to read the other verses, even if the whole thing is not released.
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

But that's the magic of songwriting. I think you can write as many verses as you wish, you can write 100 verses, but the trouble is in this format you need to stop somewhere. And for this reason I'm not too interested in other verses, if Mark decided to throw it in the bin, I don't want to know it.

The extra verse actually wasn't only on the Mexican Promo CD. I have an extremely early UK Promo CDr that has the extra verse too !!
Cost me pretty much but it's a mega rarity of course.
Guess it was withdrawn at an early stage too.
