Back to What it is and the extra verse on the Mexican release, I'm curious as to why the Mexicans were lucky enough to warrant having the extended version?

Just a mistake by the record company somewhere along the line.

Huge mistake in my books, I know it's only one verse but once you've heard it, the 'standard' album version just isn't the same!!

 

Yes, after the extended version I know exactly where they cut the "standard" one. I love the full version so much, never listen to the short one...

No, I hardly listen to the 'shorter' version now either well apart from the Live 'shorter' version.....ooooh I wonder if he ever played the extra verse Live???

In fact, there is a bootleg from 2001- London 2001 (4th June 2001), Mark Knopfler mix up the lyrics of What it is a bit. He sings parts of the extra verse, which can be found on the Mexican promo single.

I was at this concert!  I don't really remember much about it - we were a long way from the stage and a pair of binoculars would have been very useful!   I do remember William Topley and I think Dorrie Jackson was with him too.

Actually, it wasn't the best experience I have had of an MK concert, mainly because I felt disconnected due to being so far away from the stage and also Mike Henderson was just far too loud, so much so that I could hardly hear MKs guitar at times and I was desperate to hear him!

Maybe a question for Guy why the longer version only was released on a promo cd and didn’t  made the regular StP album.

The b sides together is great fun to listen.

If they would do that with the bonus tracks from the other albums it would also a great compilation.

Yes, it was edited..there were a LOT of verses. So many I lost count. It was cut simply because Mark thought it too long for the record.

I would love to read the other verses, even if the whole thing is not released.

But that's the magic of songwriting. I think you can write as many verses as you wish, you can write 100 verses, but the trouble is in this format you need to stop somewhere. And for this reason I'm not too interested in other verses, if Mark decided to throw it in the bin, I don't want to know it.

The extra verse actually wasn't only on the Mexican Promo CD. I have an extremely early UK Promo CDr that has the extra verse too !!
Cost me pretty much but it's a mega rarity of course.
Guess it was withdrawn at an early stage too.
