I love this concert, I don't see any evidence of Mark being drunk or tired, as it was the start of a new tour and career for him, he would be fine, he was a lot younger and fitter back then, when he talks during this show, there is no hint of him being anything else than sober. All the performances are great, the beautiful guitar work of Golden Heart, the moody Rudiger, the great Sonny Landreth contributions, the Last Exit To Brooklyn into Romeo & Juliet highlighting The Electra Strings, the wonderful outro to Are We In Trouble Now, and the rarely played Gravy Train. Fantastic stuff from a fantastic album. When I first heard Mark was done with Dire Straits and going solo, I was really intrigued to hear what that would sound like, but when I first heard the first song, Darling Pretty, all my worried went away, I knew Mark would be fine, and 25 years later, he still is.
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

Is it really believable that they had this big party leading to be drunk at the recording?
I mean, it was Mark’s first show of his solo career and after not playing in the public for a long time. So would he really risk his comeback by being drunk? I can’t really imagine that.

I heard a story from Marijn Schoo who attended this show... He told me the same, they had a big party before and some songs were played a couple of times before MK was happy with it...

I didn't see a drunk or hungover MK either.   I recorded the version which has SOS and MFN and they were both excellent, especially SOS which is one of my favourite long versions of the song.  I later transferred it from VHS to CD.   I hope this longer version will be the one on YT tonight.

Yes I was very lucky to be there and love to tell more about this...

In 1993 there was an interview in Record Collector magazine in which Mark told about the process of recording his new album. He explained the four locations with different musicians brought together by friends of him, including Paul Brady.  The interview continued and Mark said something like "It would be great if all musicians could come together when the album is finished to do a show, for TV or something".
So I kept that in mind and by the time the record was announced, I already knew that "Later with Jools Holland" would be the best option for this show. With the help of a friend in the UK, whom I informed about Mark's intentions, we managed to get a reservation for tickets (still free at that time) and made plans to go there.

So on the 15th of April 1996, I arrived well dressed at Victoria station, in need for a hotel. I got a 5* hotel for a 3* price just because I was 'properly dressed', anyway that started off well!
Strait to the venue in White City, where I met the others and off for some food.
Then queuing to get in. They let me in first, since I was the only one listed as coming from abroad. The wait in the lobby, with comfortable seats and drinks, BBC goodies and lots of photos from previous shows was filled with chats about previous tours and what was ahead of us.
Then the doors to the studio opened and I was called in and choose a place in the absolute center, about an inch from the stage.  The whole studio filled up quite fast and in about 20 minutes the show started.  That was pretty awkward, since the stage was very small, Mark stood just about 30 inch away from me. And with a quite low stage, we were exactly the same height. So I did a few steps back, got a thankyou from the camera man and enjoyed the rest of the show from a more comfortable angle.

Well the setlist is well know. Will upload a picture + one of the ticket.
Mark had to play a few songs over and over. He forgot the lines to Rudiger and the fourth time it was finally done correct. A Night in Summer had to be done again when the last track from the set was over, because of technical problems in the recording.
After the 3.5 hour show, I waited till most of the audience were gone and Mark was still talking at the back of the stage. I walked up there and Paul Cummings asked where I was from and how I got there, so I told the story. Then Mark excused for his tiredness since he'd gone out the previous night with the US bandmembers. He signed the 'Darling Pretty' single and we were about the last ones to leave the studio.   Somewhere I also heard that Paul Franklin had not rehearsed for this show, so it was literally the first time since the last OES concert that he played the outtro to Walk Of Life.
After the show it was still warm outside and since most public transport had stopped, I decided to walk to the hotel. About a 1.5 hour walk, but accompanied by some persons I met on the street and with this beautiful show in my mind, time flied.

I might have missed out on a few things...  will see if I still have the report that I wrote on the night of

I was there, and don't have much to add to the account above. I didn't think MK was drunk, but he is a perfectionist, thus the retakes.

Nobody said he was drunk. Well, I said it, but it was obviously a big exaggeration... I meant that he's noticeably "tired" and it really shows. And retakes are a completely normal thing for TV shows, not about being a perfectionist. I once played on TV and we recorded 2 takes just in case some additional footage will be needed or to mask some kind of a fluke later in production. But Mark seems to forget the lyrics... Well, I'd redo it too!

I especially love how Mark talks in this concert, just judging by his talking voice you can tell something is a bit off. All the chops are in place, hovewer!

A 3.5 hour show sounds even greater. Then I was wondering : are there any songs played that night that never appeared on any recording? Would be glad to know because the full VHS concert as we know it lasts approximately 1.45 hour if I'm not mistaken... thanks!

My God. I forgot I have VHS A Night In London :) I have Sultans Of Swing and Money For Nothing :)

But do you still have a device to play it on?  ;D ;)

Interestingly the tour schedule I have shows that it was recorded on 6th May, the night after I saw him in Edinburgh so the tour had started.  It started on 24th April in Galway in fact.  The schedule also shows that the band must've recorded the show in the afternoon and flew back up to Glasgow for another show the same evening.

that's the broadcast day only, not the recording day

Okay folks, it's blatantly obvious to me now!  There's a song on the record that sums me up perfectly at this moment.  :smack
