Hi all a new member here! I first saw Dire Straits at Hammersmith Odeon in Dec 85 on the BIA tour at the ripe old age of 13(nearly 14)with my older sister. Was an amazing night! Not long after I saw Alchemy on video and was disappointed that I hadn't seen Hal Lindes with the band who i think brought some amazing energy to the band(though Jack his replacement was great too)
Not much has really been said as to why Hal left during the making of BIA. Some say he left to do soundtrack work which he has done but just seems a strange time to quit just before an album /World tour. One which was to be the biggest ever. Also missing out on Live Aid etc. I read an interview where he said he did record the album and on some pressings he is credited. He has always been complimentary about Mark so just wondered if anyone knows anymore about it?

Never saw a BIA record where Hal Lindes is credited...

Actually Hal Lindes rehearsed with the band before going to Montserrat, and he went to Montserrat. But being there, it was the end. John Ilsley said in his "DS Q&A tour" when a Lindes pic was shown at the screen that "When he left everything went quiet" so I guess there was any kind of argument, maybe he wanted more presence... Maybe thats the reason why he started a career doing music for films.

So Mark recorded all the guitars himself for Brothers In Arms? Not the first and not the last time he's done it. Judging by the drums controversy, if Mark played drums, he would record it himself... As well as synths, and percussion, and saxophone, and, well, everything else

Apparently in an interview someone (MK or Jack I guess) said that the sybth guitar on "the man's too strong" was recorded by Jack Sonni.

Maybe Jack recorded something else but it sounds like MK recorded all guitars except the one by Jack.

I've got a pic of Hal with Neil Dorfsman in Montserrat and an interview where Hal says they cut the album a couple of times so he definitely did the whole album but it appears Mark redid it all himself. Always seems hard to get any firm stories from the history of Dire Straits.

Loved his take on Mark's transition to Kemper (he brought this topic on himself). Haters would probably not love his input... Overall, the guy's so smooth and very smart.

for the record, that show you went to in dec. 85 is most probably available as an audio recording, do you remember the exact date?

It's "Song for an Irish girl", you would find lot of his instrumental music in spotify. He's good.
