I never took attention to those 1983 bootlegs in cd as they looked like it was just Alchemy bootleged but I recall reading that there was a double LP of the King Biscuit series of the Princes Trust that really had something new, like Prince Charles speech and a different speech intro to GH by MK and I was searching for it for years, and finally I got a copy.
These are the bootleg cds I've been ignoring because I thought they were just Alchemy bootlegs
And this is the King Biscuit 1983 lp sheet
I was listening to it and I was amazed by the intro of some speaker intrudocing the royal couple and a small speech by Prince Charles that obviously comes from the Dominion Theatre concert in 1983, in wich DS shared stage with Duran Duran, and after that speech it starts "Once upon a time in the west", from the toms part by Terry Williams, and listening to it, you will say it's just the Alchemy recording...
... but it's not, exactly...
If you listen to it with attention you are going to notice that there are different things, piano notes you never heard before, hammond parts not noticiable before, Hal Lindes guitar with more presence, even from time to time a tambourine here and there that wasn't before in that part, but there are some things very very different and very nice:
- In Romeo, you can hear a lot of chords played by MK with the National that are not listenable in Alchemy
- Also in Romeo, the end, has many piano things totally different to the end of the Alchemy version
- Two young lovers sounds more rough, even the Lindes solo which is apparently the same, it has something different, rougher, and you would say that there are some notes missing from what you can here in Alchemy
- Tunnel of love, at the start, has some different notes on keyboards, also on piano, but the main difference comes at the end, with very different thins on piano, specially at the very end, which makes it magical, in my opinion.
- Going home, has a MK speech in which he talks about playing for a good cause and says they usually play for 2 hours. That's obviously from the Dominion Theatre concert for the Princes Trust, as they shared the bill with Duran Duran, they had to shorten their set to one hour.
- The end of Going Home has some differences, specially on keyboards, more prominents at the fast part, but the more evident to me, is at the end, with some very nice ticling notes at the piano, the drum kicks Terry usually plays to end the song. It sounds more clear and better played that on Alchemy.
- The radio dj says twice (at the start and at the end) that the concert happened at the Hammersith Odeon, if he means the Princes Trust, he's wrong because it happened at the Dominion Theatre, but if he means the recording is from Alchemy, then, he's right!
After listening to it, my main thought was "This is not Alchemy, but the real Dominion Theatre, that must had been played quite similar to what they played at the Hammersmith Odeon", but it's so similar, besides all the differences, that I ended thinking it's more likely this is a rough unmixed version of Alchemy, mixed with the two speeches from the Dominion Theatre (the speaker and Prince Charles, and MK speech)
Here you have the link to it at unlimited, so you can listen to it and say your opinion.
