Saying that Kempers generally sound like crap is ridiculous, sorry.
This bashing of digital technology is getting tedious. It's like those people who think they need 24/192 downloads and they could hear all the differences.
I bet most of the people - even trained musicians and engineers - couldn't tell the difference between a good Kemper profile and a recorded tube amp, especially on a recording (provided the profiles have been decently created).
Even modelling (not profiling) has become so refined that it is hard to tell from the real deal. You would be astonished on how many recordings this kind of technology has been used now.

If you don't like the sounds MK get with his Kemper, it has something to do with the profiling and personal tastes - but not the capabilities of the Kemper.

Personally I don't like the sound of the Texas Specials in his Signature Strat. When he started using this with "retro" amps, it just sounded to harsh and edgy to my ears.
I'd rather have the smooth sound of the 90's or the bell like sound of DS albums with a lot of compression.
But does that mean that his Komet or Tone King amps sound bad? Of course not.

I don't like the sound David Gilmour created with his Black Strat and his amps on the last tour. I prefer his red Strat with EMG pickups soundwise.
That doesn't mean his equipment is bad - it is just another sound you like or dislike.

I'm sad that his guitar playing has suffered a lot over the last years - comparing 2019 with 2005 live concerts for example makes me cringe - but this nothing to do with the Kemper amps.

It is the great Anto Drennan with a Boss Katana amp which is basically a practice amp. Does that sound bad? I don't think so.

Again: what is the "real thing"? The sound of MK has changed significantly over the years and his Tone King with a Strat sounds completely different than e.g. his Pensa Suhr with an overdriven Soldano amp.
When I listen to some recordings I think that his sound is much too grainy and scratchy nowadays - because of the pickups / amp combination. I'd prefer a good modeling to these sounds anytime.

The reason why I have been avoiding modelling for many years was not only the sound (which is getting more and more perfect) - but the feeling while playing. You always had a latency and a feeling you were not realy connected - if that makes any sense.
Even this has been improved so much, that modelling / profiling is now at a point where even professional musicians use these amps - not just amateurs. It is all over the world on literally thousands of records by renowned musicians.
The great Jerry Donahue even used a Morley JD10 Jerry Donahue Amp Emulator extensively - which is a very basic tool. And he always sounded really good.

Is the "real thing" also a cheap chinese tube amp for $200 - just because it has valves?
Does that compare to a Two Rock for $3000 or a Dumble for $50.000? Certainly not.

It is no rocket science to emulate a one channel amp with such a basic layout like the early amps have and MK uses.

The magic comes from his fingers.

I answered what the real thing is, the amps MK is trying to simulate, so obviously chinese amps are not involved in the discussion, is that the very important question I didn't answer ?
