2-hour interview with Pick
« on: October 23, 2020, 11:28:27 AM »
The first part was linked to on Guy's forum not long ago; the second part was released today. Lots of drum talk, as expected, but many bits and pieces about DS and MK, Dylan and more. Pick is very talkative, but he's a great storyteller.

Part 1:

Part 2:

I' ve really enjoyed both parts , he seems to be a very nice guy , down to earth ,and his conception of music is great....

Lovely fellow and great musician. It's kind of sad to see how his mood kind of changes when he discusses DS. He looks sad then, and you can sense the distance he has to Mark. In the second episode, when he talks about Love Over Gold, it's quite clear that he had less and less input into the creative part as things became Mark's show.

Exactly ....it must be hard to be treated as a mere performer....
The more I read things about Mark 's behavior, the more I think that he must be some kind of grumpy bear  , or a true dictator ....
This will no keep me from being a fan (been for 35 years), but I don' t know if I would like to meet in , afraid of being very disappointed.

Yes Pick, besides being a great drummer, he is also very nice. IMO when you enter into the particular relationships that Mark had with those who worked with him, without knowing him in person, you tend to discredit him, I disagree.
Pick was certainly a great drummer but his luck was to play with Mark for only 5 years and the world is aware of him too...

Didn't know Pick was an A.S Roma fan.

I rarely find time to sit down and watch something like this in its entirety but I made a start in it tonight and I like him a lot.

I think he looks a bit like Danny Cummings in ten years.

Thanks for sharing these, really interesting.

Its strange how similar one of the comments Pick makes is to one which Terry William's makes in an interview  I heard with him.

Both of them say that in recording that there were long periods of time where they were just waiting around for weeks to be recorded and felt detached from the process. In Picks case for LOG  this seems to be one of the things that contributed to him moving on.  Seems Mark and Neil Dorfsman were a bad combination if you were a drummer.

What is clear is that Pick was a driving force in the band , also that he contributed heavily to live arrangements

Having run a small recording studio and produced a few bands here and there from my experience it's as much to do with the nature of the recording process as it is to do with band politics and a lot depends on how well prepared an artist is beforehand  and what their expectations are.

Unless a band is looking for a pure live recording (Much easier and more fun imho) usually the drummers parts are laid down over the first 3 days or so and then that's it, maybe half a day of fixes if necessary. Lots of sitting around in between.  But then I have had the odd client who wanted to spend infinite amounts of time on bass drum compression levels, and on occasion I've ended up completely rerecording drum parts.  I completely understand his frustration.

It was interesting to hear Picks take on the drum programming on ID. Those old machines were a complete nightmare, programming a speak and spell was easier!.....

Another interview with Pick. Much of the same as the previous interview, but there are some added details - he mentions for instance how after Dire Straits he and his wife visited John and his wife and found that he and John had nothing to talk about :) Worth a listen.

This interview has quite a sad story in. It’s part of a playlist.

Nasty that MK could behave like that I think.

What an insight to what was going on in the band at the time and how their succes changed the personal dynamics.
I can totally understand Pick and much respect him as a person as well as his artistic integrity. And of course he was a fenomenal drummer, really special, and irrreplaceble imho.
