Knopfler did backing vocals to Leo Sayer
« on: April 15, 2020, 11:31:37 AM »
According to this article, Mark Knopfler, Frank Zappa and Van Morrison did backing vocals to a Leo Sayer track, that was a b side in 1986...

http://www.noise11.com/news/van-morrison-mark-knopfler-and-frank-zappa-were-once-leo-sayers-backing-singers-20200414

I add that track to my "Knopfler colaborations" playlist in Spotify (subscribe to the playlist to have it always on hand)

Well, this is new... Nobody even know about it.

I remember it was said in Michael Oldfield book that MK also recorded with Stevie Nicks and that one never saw the light yet...

I didn't know that. Thanks jbaent :)
Stevie Nicks?  I remember that.

Stevie Nicks "24 karat gold : songs from the vault"

she loves him still
(Lyrics: Stevie Nicks, Music: Mark Knopfler

Publication of a remake of a song which was presumably recorded as a demo version in the early 80th by Steve Nicks. Here Stevie made the lyrics for an extract from the soundtrack of ? by Mark.

But that is not a recording of MK with Stevie Nicks. It's Stevie Nicks recording over a MK song...

I thought it was a collaboration with Stevie Nicks that didn't happen.

According Michael Oldfield book, Knopfler recorded with Stevie Nicks but that, if happened never saw the light.

What Stevie Nick did was use a "Cal" soundtrack song as a sample in a song of her.

Yes, but if you listen to the Stevie Nicks song it's not a direct lift from Cal. It's a new recording, different arrangement, probably different musicians.

My point is that the Oldfield book could have been referring to this. The demo was recorded for her 3rd album released in 1985, which would also fit.

I believe it was 1996, Mark was touring with DS in 1986 wasn’t he? Funny thing I highly doubt Mark remembers that.

Frank Zappa died in 1993, so ...

Is the interview/article even trustworthy?

I read only the DSIS newsletter for December 86, where there was no mention of any studio work. Now I just had a look at the September newsletter, and indeed, Mark spent a lot of time in the studio in 86, so who knows.

I just listened to the recording and they do say 1996.

Now read the article

It says exactly this:

One of the lesser known fun-facts about Leo Sayer is that he once recorded a song titled ‘Passion’ and the backing singers were Mark Knopfler, Van Morrison and Frank Zappa.

The song ‘Passion’ was relegated to a 1986 b-side to the single ‘Solo’ and never made it to a Leo Sayer album.
