I love the story about Bobbie Gentry going completely off stage. If you think about it, this might be probably the hardest thing to do for a man. You have everything, money, fame, success, and then you just leave it all alone. That takes tremendous willpower, but in the long run, saves you from dying poor or in obscurity, or with people laughing at you, or forgetting you. The ultimate form of leaving early is probably The 27 Club. Imagine we'd now have 77-year-old Jim Morrison 
But he's the legend instead. I respect each man and woman who can quit with dignity. Because only time will tell who is who anyway.
Reading your message the song „Will you catch a falling star“ written by Boddy Braddock came to my mind immediately.
You are absolutely right. I also have the biggest respect for everyone who manages to find the right time to take this step back.
