Will check this out. Just clicked the link to have a quick peek, and it was straight to Done With Bonaparte. Quick band intro, and, of course "You and me, Rich. And the rest of you, good luck". Can't believe Mark still says that in 2019. Not quite comedy gold, and it hasn't gotten any better with age ha-ha!

---

Edit: Watched Telegraph Road. Incredible version. I need to check some versions from the STP tour to compare, but I'm pretty sure TR never sounded as good as this again. Insane playing. And the old Pensa Suhr and whatever amp he was using back then (Soldano still?) sounded so much better than the newer Pensas and amps.

As I said, I need to check the STP tours, but it seems to me there is markedly difference in his playing before and after the motorcycle accident.

I think I've heard he used the Crate amps mainly for clean sounds (the song Golden Heart for instance). Not sure.

Listened to Lyon and Nimes from 2001, and though they are very good versions, the 1996 versions I've heard are better still. From 2005 onwards, he never had the same fluidity in his playing.

Been a long time since I listened to some GH shows, Loving the setlist at Galway. Brilliant, Gravy train... what a song!

Marks shows have definitely changed over the years as his guitar playing has become less of a focus. I'm not a huge fan of the songwriting on golden heart, but the guitar playing on the album and tour... definitely his peak.

Yeah, so my point was that Mark played superb guitar in 96, and after checking some STP shows, I feel there was a slight decline. But after the accident in 2003, from the 2005 tour onwards, I think his playing got noticeably worse. Gone was the fluidity and dexterity and fire in his playing. It was of course never terrible, but some songs such as Sultans simply became a meandering mess, to my ears at least.

There is the ageing process and his giving priority to songwriting over guitar playing (i.e. lack of practice), of course, but I'm curious how much the accident contributed to this.

Sultans "a meandering mess"?    Some of the 2010 concerts had wonderful Sultans.  Have you listened to Manchester and Brighton from 2010?    TR is great, too, from many of the 2010 concerts.

I don't remember which concerts I have or have not listened to, but I have listened to enough shows from all the tours to have been quite underwhelmed. Obviously, some (you used the word "some" as well) versions of Sultans were good, even great, but nothing like before. I don't remember when he started doing this, but at some point the Sultans solos became a series of disjointed phrases that really didn't go anywhere. Like he didn't complete the storyline. And this got worse with time and resulted in Sultans feeling meandering and messy. There were several good Telegraph versions too, but they pale in comparison to the 96 versions (IMO).

Are you listening to YouTube recordings or official soundboard recordings?    I can't find any of the examples I have mentioned on YT, so unless you have the soundboard it's possible you haven't heard them.

I, too, have been listening to Sultans and TR from the beginning and there are many wonderful versions from before 1996 and since!

Just out of interest, have you attended any of the concerts on this tour?   :)

No, I haven't. On purpose. I was so-so satisfied with the Tracker show I attended, and I didn't expect him to get any better as he got older, so I passed. Now I wish I had gone to hear at least Once Upon a Time and Bacon Roll and to experience the new sound system, but the rest of the show has left me cold (listening to several downloads and YT clips). And, honestly, seeing him frail and old like this is pretty sad. He's the same age as my parents, and the sense I have that they are withering away also applies to Mark. I want to keep as many good memories of him as I can. If that makes any sense.
