Just got back from Nashville and it was the concert of a lifetime.  The show
went kinda like this:  first half was Marty Stuart, Travis Tritt and Kris
Kristofferson doing about 3 songs each of Jonny Cash and Waylon Jennings
music.  Mark stepped out to play a guitar solo on most of the songs and was
immediately greated with huge ovations.  Waylon and Johnny were presented
their "Chettie" awards for their contributions to music.  The award is the
headstock and first few frets of a Gibson guitar.  There were some other
great perfomances (Waylon's band the Whalers (sp?) played together for the
first time in 17 years).  Gillian Welch and Dave Rawling were awsome,
combining folk and bluegrass into something different and wonderful.

Then Mark took over the show!  All of the talk about him not having any
stage presence can be shelved.  MARK OWNS NASHVILLE!  All of the perfomers
repeatedly thanked him for making the show happen.  John Anderson and Mark
played one of Mark's songs (which one I can't remember right now but it was
the one Anderson recorded and had a country hit with).  Mark finished the
show with a set like this:

Setting Me Up  (which Waylon has recorded)
Everly Brothers song (sorry, I don't know the title, either, but he wrote it
a few days ago after Chet, over breakfast, was telling Mark about how he met
the Everly Brothers)
Romeo and Juliet
Sultans of Swing (it was incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Kristofferson came back out and they did another song then Chet came out
and presented Mark with a beautiful Gibson Country Gentleman guitar, to
thank him for making the show happen.  Then the show finished with Mark and
Chet doing Next Time I'm in Town.  Chet's health was not good - he even try
to play a guitar.

Mark was quite the extrovert during the show, cracking jokes and having a
great time.

The Master Session was fantastic, too.  The whole band was there.  Chet was
there.  Sonny Landreth was in the audience.  Mark talked at length about his
musical influences and song writing style and approach.  On  the subject of
"copying" styles, Mark talked at length about building a musical vocabulary
based on people you listen to, researching music history and going back and
listening to the music of the 1920's to today.  His idea is to take that
music and make something of your own.  When he records something that sounds
like a "Shadows" song or and Everly Brothers song, it is intended as the
most sincere form of flattery and never an attempt to profit by trying to
sound like someone else.  Mark has repeatedly show he has his own style of
music and shame on anyone who thinks he would "steal" someone else's music.

I have gone on enough.  I am sure others will have a lot of input and we
here in the US are looking forward to hearing about the NHB shows.

Hello lads-

Well... I have waited 3 years to see Mark live and that all came true last
week.
Everything was perfect! The show, the after show, the master sessions... Just
everything!!

I did have some problems with my photos turning out well so I'm in dire need
of some. I would really like it if each person that attened the concert and
took photos could send me 1 or 2 of the show.  I was crushed when Ivan, Rob,
and myself went to pick the photos up and they did not turn out at all! :(
PLEASE.. if everyone could send me a photo I could atleast have some photos
for the show. E-mail me for my address.

I was able to get back stage to see all Mark's guitars and meet the rest of
the guys. All the photos of Mark's guitars turned out perfect! Everyone I met
was so nice and did not mind to have a photo take with me.

I was not able to attend the Ed Bicknell seminar, as we went to Memphis
that day. Who did attend this?

As far as them showing the concert on T.V..... I spoke with some people from
TomKats and they tell me that they will not have that information out for
another two weeks or so. As of now they are deciding if they should air it and
maybe even make a video tape. In the future they mite show it on PBS. If you
are also interested in buying some professional prints from the photographers
at the show, that information will also be out soon. No need to worry....I
will keep you all informed with that issue once the news comes out. It will
just take a few weeks!!

I'm going to talk with Thomas and see if we could get something set up with
posting the pictures of the show and so forth. I will also be glad to have him
post the photos of Mark's guitars.

I'am so glad I got the chance to meet Mark in person and meet all the other
fans at the show. I love you all!

The very happy,

LARRY ELDER

Another one, about the Ed Bicknell talk during the Chet Atkins Musicians Days

Subject: TR-list: MK in Nashville

Hello my fellow TRoadies,

I just got back from Nashville (about 4.25 hours by car).  I cranked up the
PC immediately and checked to see who of my fellow TRoadies in attendance
had already posted their reports.  It would appear that some people are not
home yet, but I have a few additional observations to add to those already
made and yet to come.

I was at the CA Musician Days last year (when MK came out at the end for
one song!) so I was extremely anxious to see much more this year.  We were
not disappointed!  As Alex noted, Mark was greeted extremely well from his
very first stroll on stage.  I didn't think that most people in attendance
even knew who Mark was, but his applause and standing ovations seemed as
long and genuine as for the Nashville icons Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings
(both have been in poor health).  Mark responded to the outpouring of
affection and appreciation with sincere humility and humor.  Mark was in
wonderfully witty form and had the audience in laughter on several
occasions.  He mentioned that he had breakfast with Chet that morning ("as
one does") and told of how Chet had sent his grits back to the kitchen.  I
wish I could remember more of the exact dialogue, but my brain was in
overload the whole evening!

All of the music was wonderful, and, as I told the rest of my group on the
way out, Sultans of Swing was worth the price of admission alone!  It was
incredibly well played, better than any version (audio or video) that I can
recall.  Of course being there probably had a lot to do with it, but
apparently I wasn't the only person so impacted.

The presentation of the Gibson guitar from Chet to Mark was another example
of their strong friendship.  Mark was quoted in a local newspaper as saying
that when he presented Chet with the first "Chettie" at last year's
concert, it was the proudest moment of his life.

I did not attend the after-concert party, but Mark did not attend either.

I did not attend the MK Masters Session on Thursday, but my sister did.
She works at Vanderbilt University across the street from Blair Auditorium.
She practically ran into Mark and Ed when they arrived by taxi.  She was
not big fan like me, but she went because she knew how badly I wanted to,
but couldn't (no reservation).  She came away extremely impressed and I
think a new convert has been made.  She also pointed out the MK humor and
wit.  She did get to meet Mark afterwards, shaking his hand twice and got
MK to autograph the Musician Days flyer for me.  It is signed "To Ken,
Happy Anniversary! Mark Knopfler" in large handwriting. The concert date,
June 24th was our 20th wedding anniversary!  (My wife, whom gets overdoses
of things MK/DS from me, really enjoyed the show as well!).  My sister said
Mark was taking time to talk with everyone getting autographs and was very
gracious indeed!

I did attend the Ed Bicknell session at Tomkats on Friday afternoon.  Ed
spoke to a small audience of about 40 or so persons.  Many were
songwriters, musicians, managers etc.  There were some record company
personnel in attendance as well.  It was a question and answer session
that, as Ed put it, "could last for 5 minutes or 2 hours" depending on the
involvement of the audience.  He ended up speaking for about 2.5 hours.
Some of the highlights...

-MK was once approached by Ford who wanted to use his music to promote the
Ford Sierra.  MK said something like "No, it's a piece of crap" and refused
to allow them the use of his music.  As it turned out, Ford copied
Telegraph Road for their commercials, but just enough that legally it
wasn't copyright infringement.  I think the music had to have 7 or 8 copied
notes in succession, but the copy always stopped short enough to keep them
(Ford) out of trouble.  MK called Ed, told him they were using his music
anyway and he should have just said "Yes".  It was a big contract (I recall
about US$750,000) and Ed said he fell out of his chair when Mark said "No".
-Ed said that David Knopfler didn't quit Dire Straits, he was DEFINITELY
fired!
-Ed had to wake Mark up just before session.  Apparently he had a long
night (but not at the after concert party!)
-Ed made the observation that he and MK never discuss the possibility of a
Dire Straits reunion - it just never comes up in conversation! :(
-MK has taken a somewhat "self-indulgent" path with his new music, and that
although Ed hasn't always agreed with him, MK can certainly afford to take
a less commercially successful route at this stage of his career.
-I asked Ed if there was any chance of seeing MK play again during the
events that ran through today (Sunday).  Ed said almost definitely not,
that MK and the Band would be in the studio exclusively.
-Ed is a very funny and frank speaker.  He didn't hold back any punches
when talking about people he doesn't care for.
-Ed autographed my Notting Hillbillies liner.  He said he would because he
did play on it.
-When the session was finishing up, Tom Morales (President of Tomkats, the
promoter of Chet Atkins Musician Days) brought a note to Ed and said that
VH-1 was interested in making a special or the concert.  Ed indicated that
should be OK!
-Tom also said that CBS wanted to videotape some of Mark's Master Session,
but Mark said NO!
-Tom said that MK wanted less of a roll in next year's Chet Atkins Days,
but has apparently agreed to come back again!
-Tom is trying to convince Mark to bring the Notting Hillbillies for next
years event.  COOL!

An incredible 3 days... my only regret being that I couldn't attend the
Master's Session (I think I could have gotten in if I had showed up!)  My
respect for Mark Knopfler the musician, songwriter and man has grown
substantially as a result!!!

Sorry for going on and on - but for me and my fellow North American fans,
this was probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience!  Come on '99!

So VH-1 were interested, but must've pulled out or maybe Mark pulled the plug on it.  :think

Great find, some good information there. It makes me want to hear the show even more now, if only for that Sultans of Swing performance.
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

I remember that in Tomas Molin website, www.knopfler.net, that now it's gone, there were some great pictures of the concert, including some of Mark Knopfler with Johnie Cash, but no matter how I dig into wayback machine, I can't find any of that pictures  :'(

According to the only archived page for that, were made by Pam Masson and Alex Bilbray.

And this one from Alex Bilbrey. I think they are Marty Stuart and Johnie Cash.

I know there were more and better. I remember about one of MK with Johnie Cash!

And in issue of the now dissapeared fanzine Rockaway, I found the programme cover and the ticket, in black and white, but...

It's frustrating that is so difficult to find information of such a great concert. It's like it never happened!

I'm sure someone from the TR Mailing list days should have more pictures or even more material, I hope they still have and could share it with us.

This was such a big concert that must been not forgotten!
