In England we have morris dancers who dance around a maypole, which has coloured ribbons hanging from the top and the morrismen, or other folk also, hold the ends of the ribbons and twist and weave under and over, around the maypole on the village green, to music.  It happens usually on May Day, or to celebrate Midsummer.

I long for the day when the England rugby team perform a morris dance in response to the All Blacks haka  :D

I wonder if "So Far From The Clyde" refers to a concrete naval inccident. After a beaching, a ship is driven into the land willingly by a "hangman".
It would be very interesting to know WHEN and WHERE this song lyrics are set. Somehow I always think about Namibia with its skeleton coast or Patagonia or another far country. And it must be very far from the Clyde, mustn

And another point: I have NO clue what "Cleaning my gun" is about. Is it about a store that sells weapons? Is Cleaning my Gun a phrase or is it meant literally? There is the name of a firm, bla bla and Malarkey, anybody has an idea about that?

I thought "So Far From The Clyde" could be about this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_River_Clyde but I could be wrong... Any ideas?
As for "Cleaning My Gun", I first thought it was about a bar or something, like in "Sucker Row" but I'm not sure. We need a transcript  :)

Hmmm, what about this?

http://www.nytimes.com/1998/08/09/world/on-an-indian-shore-where-ships-go-to-die-profit-is-law.html?pagewanted=all

At least it contains the description of "beaching" a ship and then wrack it down - even the word "hangman" is used... Maybe MK googles a good deal for songwriting these days?  ;D Just remember Boom, like that...

Hi guys,

here's a partial transcript for "cleaning my gun":

I keep a weathered eye on the horizon
back to the wall
I like to know who's coming through the door
that's all
it's the old army training
kicking in
I'm not complaining
it's the world we live in
Galloni & Malarkey(???)
they're a devious firm
take it to the cleaners
and let them burn

The help is breaking dishes
in the kitchen
thanks a lot
We hired the worst dishwasher
this place ever got
in below the radar
they wanna spoil our fun
in the meantimde
I'm cleaning my gun

remember he got so cool
ice froze at the tank
he lit a fire beneath her
just so she would crank

Keep a weathered eye on the horizon
tap stone glass(???) now and then
I gotta case of old damnation
for when you get here my friend
we can have ourselves a party
before they come
in the meantime
I'm cleaning my gun

We had women and a merry ball
we had a DJ
used to eat pretty much all
paying his way
ever since the goons came in
took apart the place
I keep a tyre iron in the corner
just in case

I may need a magic bullet
on a little chain
keep us safe from the chilly winds
and out of the rain
we gonna might need bullets
should we get stuck
any which way
we're gonna need a little luck
We could still get gas in heaven
and a drink in kingdom come
in the meantime
I'm cleaning my gun

I have no clue what the song is about; A biker bar? The mafia? A family feud?
As Love Expresso says, maybe the key is the "Malarkey" firm - if we can decipher it.

Detective work is fun! Thanks for the research on "so far from the clyde"!

Not really had a good listen to the lyrics on " Cleaning My Gun" but i'm loving the Gibson sound on this track. The best "rockier" song we've had for a long time. I've already decided that, for me,this is the best MK solo album since Golden Heart. ;D

My idea of heaven is a place where the Tyne meets the Delta, where folk music meets the blues.

You know, I'm not 100% convinced that it is a Gibson on this track. Could well be wrong but I wonder if he's playing the Grosh on this one.

hi,
I think that the guitar on "Cleaning my gun" is a Pensa maybe MK1 or MK2 ! it sound like on "Millionaire blues" an "Kingdom come". the Gibson is more rough and heavy !
If I realised that the chances were slim,
How come I'm so surprised when the tide rolled in
