The radio story is what is called an anecdote. Artists are supposed to give anecdotal stories of "how was it like then?" often. "My dad purchased my first guitar which I then went to smash against a '52 Fender Bassman" is not a good story, it's a prat story. Of course, he actually defaced the cute story by actually endorsing the smashing of a Fender bass during the 2001 tour, but I guess he never thought people would connect the dots.
