Well here another one. I play in a band and we do some BD covers but in my opinion, we could skip these. ;D It's no real fun to play, or listen to it. Worst thing about BD is the fan base: if you say a or any BD song doesn't move you, your "musical taste is worthless" because "he is the one". Actually, he's doing the same thing over and over again for years and he seems to be very good at selling the same thing over and over again (which is in my opinion his only strong point). From my point of view, his music is only created around HIM because HE feels like HE is The Best. That's one of the reasons why I can't stand listening to his music for more than 5 minutes...

I totally agree. I saw him in 2007, and watching the clouds move by at the outdoor venue was more entertaining than watching the actual show. He actually came back to play another show at that venue this year, and I believe it sold out. How that happened I don't know- you would have to pay me to sit through that again. I was at a Neil Young show last year and before the concert some people nearby were talking about "how terrible Bob Dylan sounds these days". Some guy nearby automatically started arguing with them claiming "you don't listen to Dylan for the voice!" Then what exactly do you listen for?

Sorry Pottel- different strokes for different folks.  8) Go ahead and make fun of Tool. Try me.  :P

When I saw Dylan for the first time live, July 1995, the first impression he gave was entering the stage and spit right into the direction of the audience.
Not taking of his sun glasses for a second, it was altogether a great show nevertheless. Some very angry security men watched out and caught some bootleggers... Musically I only remember a great version of "Tangled up in blue"...

I think Bob Dylan stands above all. Imagine since he is around, most of us weren

I absolutely agree with both of you. And LE, I also agree that Bob - unlike other artists - can allow himself this arrogance but that doesn't mean I have to like his attitude or music.
I like his lyrics, I love "Not Dark Yet" for example but his melodies are endlessly boring and repetitive. Every 80's hair metal band has more challenging melodies! Same goes for Roger Waters, but I don't even like his lyrics anymore. He used to be a creative mastermind as long as he was in PF but ever since The Wall he has shown zero development. Again, boring music and regarding his lyrics, he's nothing more than an angry whiny old man, complaining about politics and his former band members. And say something against Rog and his fans will kick you  ::)

Oh and localhero, my toenails roll up whenever I hear something by James Blunt  ;D

I love Bob Dylan. He has so much material that there's bound to be some stinkers in there, but when he's good, he's brilliant.

Visions of Johanna may just be the best song ever written.

Hum Roger Waters did the same thing as Mark : leaving a very popular band to go solo and do what HE likes.

Excepted that Dires Straits did not play on Live 8

That indeed is a fact I really admire - even though it makes me think if the number of his fans is SO low... but that would be mean, wouldn

All right, now that I have had time to decide if I will ever speak to Dusty again...  ;)  Allow me to retort.  I personally LOVE Phil Collins, and here are some of the reasons why:

1. He allowed his personal suffering (from the divorce of his first wife) to directly affect the mood and lyrics of his first solo album, FACE VALUE.

2. He personally answers every single fan letter that he receives, in his own hand - not typed.

3. He decided on his own (in 2004) that he had done enough touring, and stopped for good... until 2007 when his Genesis band mates went out for one last time.  But you won't see Phil doing endless "Farewell Tours."  (Ironically, he titled his final tour in '04 the "First Final Farewell Tour.")

4.  He has played with literally everyone: B.B. King, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Robert Plant... even simpleton Howard Jones!

5. He was the only person on the planet with the balls to play both Live Aid shows... and for the record, Dusty, Phil was ASKED to do this by the show's originator Bob Geldof... how could he refuse?  Same with MIAMI VICE... he was a invited to do the show, as were many celebrities in the '80's.  Why say no?

6.  He had the talent to step in front of the mic when Gabriel departed from Genesis... and yet he continued to play the drums not only on record but in concert as well!

7.  He had the talent to step back behind the drum set and go out on tour with his own Big Band (in 1996/'97) in which he re-worked some if his greatest songs into jazz band staples.

8.  He had the endurance to record albums (both solo and Genesis) and tour for said releases  almost every single year from 1976 through 1987.  In addition, he juggled a solo career AND his Genesis career without EVER alolowing the two to conflict.  I never saw Mark do this when he was in Dire Straits!

9. He writes, records, sings, drums and plays keyboards/piano on every solo album, as well as produced (with his pals Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks) every Genesis release since 1981.

10.  He has been an advocate for abused children and autistic children worldwide.  Okay, so he dumped his second wife via fax, and his third wife left him high and dry.  The guy has poor marriage skills.  But he has never been busted for drug use or picking up undercover Cops in men's bathrooms, in fact he has never been arrested for ANYTHING, and he constantly gives the fans what they want.  You won't hear Phil fans complaining that he never releases live material... unlike our beloved MK!

Take that all you PC haters!   ;D

Peace.

OK, let's see...

1. So what? I'm sure most songwriters have used the breakdown of personal relationships as inspiration, you can go back to Hank Williams or even many before that (Gershwin, Cole Porter) to find songs about that, big deal.

2. That is good, I must admit. Have you written to him?

3. So has he stopped touring or not? Hopefully he has.

4. Again, not really that big a deal. I've conceded that he's a fine drummer so it's not surprising that he should play drums with a lot of different artists.

5. OK, I'll take your word for it that Bob Geldof asked him to do both, and since it was for charity, fair enough. But on your second point, this is where I have a real problem with him. Just because he was asked to "act" (and I use the term loosely) on Miami Vice, doesn't mean he had to do it. He could have said no. But his ego was big enough to want to have an acting career as well as a succesful music career. MK was asked to record with Michael Jackson. By your rationale, he should have done it, just because he was asked even though

Jackson was a classic child molester who manipulated and coerced his victims into doing things that they knew were wrong.  He was accused more than once, and I don't care how "great" of a pop icon he was...

One of my favourite films is the second Dirty harry film, Magnum Force. Clint Eastwood has a great line in that "A man's got to know his limitations." I bet MK was offered films in the 80s, but he turned them down because he knew his limitations and stuck to what he was good at, ie music. But Collins, and others, like Sting, just couldn't do that. "It isn't just the records, you must have Hollywood." Lots of musicians have tried, they almost always fail. Kristofferson's the only one who ever pulled it of I would say.

6. He's not half the singer Peter Gabriel is. Just my opinion, but I know a lot of people would say that Genesis' best period was in the 70s before Gabriel left. (Incidentally, a very good friend of mine went to public school (Charterhouse) with Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks in the 60s :) )

7. Good that he went back behind the drum kit, but re-working sons into a big band format is boring and lame. Just my opinion, but if MK said he was doing that I would roll my eyes. Good thing MK doesn't look back in this way and instead challenges us with new material in different directions.

8. Arguably, MK didn't HAVE to have a solo career, because he controled Dire Straits. He still kept busy enough. Familiarity breeds contempt they say. Maybe that's why I have contempt for Phil fucking Collins, because I got fed up of seeing him all through the 80s.

9. Fair enough, we know he is a good drummer and keyboard player. Still no excuse for not bringing in a proper guitar player for the Both Sides album, just so he could say that he did everything to urther bolster his ego.

10. I certainly don't complain that Phil Collins doesn't release live material. If anything, there are surely too many Phil Collins records in the world. MK got done for speeding once, so I guess that makes Phil Collins a better person.

Oh, and on your last point, well, yes, if Miles Davis was acting in Miami Vice, then yes, he should stick to music. Similarly, Bruce Willis is an actor so fair play (but he did try to have a music career, eurghhh). I wouldn't have any problem with any TV show using Phil Collins' music, but Phil Collins trying (and failing) to act is just sad.

To be fair, MK playing himself in a 3 minute comedy sketch along with other notable guitarists isn't quite the same as seeking a feature film career like Collins.

Dusty,

Although I do not wish to debate this with you point for point, there are a few things that you wrote that I would like to correct.

... Have you written to him?

Actually, yes I have.  Twice.  And he responded both times with very nice letters in his own hand.  I have them framed in my home as I write this.  By the way, I wrote Mark in 2005... guess what... no response.  Not saying that Mark HAD to respond... just that Phil DID.  Twice.

... OK, I'll take your word for it that Bob Geldof asked him to do both, and since it was for charity, fair enough.

You don't have to take my word for it, you can watch the Live Aid DVD's and see the interview where Phil discuss this very fact.

But on your second point, this is where I have a real problem with him. Just because he was asked to "act" (and I use the term loosely) on Miami Vice, doesn't mean he had to do it. He could have said no. But his ego was big enough to want to have an acting career as well as a successful music career.

You are perfectly correct that Phil did not have to accept the invitation to appear on MIAMI VICE but the point I was trying to make was that he did not force himself on the show... they sought him out.  (Miles Davis as well.)  As for your point about Michael Jackson, firstly: I stand by what I said about Jackson, and secondly: Stating that Knopfler should have played with Jackson simply because he was asked to is YOUR rationale, not mine.  I believe that if an artists is asked, they have a choice to make.  I am proud of Knopfler for not going that route with MJ for many reasons.  But Phil made a choice because he wanted to.  I can't fault the guy for it.  I just can't.  But again, I was only trying to say that Phil did not force himself on the producers of the show, and I think that YOU think that he did.

... MK got done for speeding once, so I guess that makes Phil Collins a better person.

The last point I wish to make is my most important one on this topic: I am not in any way trying to compare Phil and Mark as honorable men, nor as musicians, and I think that you have misunderstood me on this point.  Please keep in mind that it was YOU that started a Thread - one that was antagonistic toward someone's music whom I hold dear in my life, knowing full well when you did it that I would respond in defense of the man (possibly even hoping that I would... even taking steps to post said Thread when I was not able to view the site because I was visiting your beautiful home country) - and now you are continually piling on and piling on.  I respect that you dislike Phil for any and all of your reasons.  All I ask is that you respect that I love the man for my reasons.  The bottom line for me is that Phil Collins' music literally saved my life at a time when I was on the brink of suicide.  My Mom had just died of Cancer; I was fourteen years old; and Phil's music - specifically his first solo album - helped me deal with the pain and loss.  But of course you knew that.  That is why you wrote:

... I feel safe in posting this thread because I know that BPENCID (sorry, I always get the spelling wrong) is on holiday in Scotland at the moment...

If you want to take shots at me, take shots at me directly.  You knew my feelings on Phil's music and you went out of your way to diss the guy when I was on vacation.  Not cool my friend.  Not cool at all.
i know for a fact that dusty was just fooling around. let's not blow this up any further. bpd, you know me, trust me. (and with the blow up part i mean anyone, not bpd in particular )
any Knopfler, Floyd or Dylan will do....
