Listening to the Valencia recording now. I guess it's OK soundwise, but it is pretty lifeless as the vocals are completely dry (no reverb) and there is very little ambient sound. It works as a rough mix and as keepsake from the concert, but how nice it would be with a proper, official live recording. It's also a bit hard to listen to Mark's playing because you get it exactly as it is, warts and all. At the concert, things blend a lot, so the rough spots are not so noticeable. There are also tuning issues going on. Sometimes the flutes are not in tune, other times the guitars sound out of tune. Not a lot, but it is still bothering.

Listening to Telegraph now. Richard's solo at the intro is totally out of tune! This is outrageous for a production at this level.

you mean at 2:55 ? it's just a playing error

I mean the whole time.

yes the instrument is not 100% perfectly tuned but not out of tune either, at 2:55 it is accentuated by a playing error

Listen around 2:45-2:48. That's bad.

I also noted on On Every Street that Mark's guitar is not well tuned too. I know he uses chorus, but that's not what I'm talking about. That this happens at a gig in a sweaty pub is perfectly normal and acceptable, but here, with each musician having their personal tech who maintains and tunes the instruments with top-quality tuners? I'm a little suprised, to say the least.

I guess your 2:45 is my 2:55 (different format ?, Richard is not playing at my 2:45-2:48), it's a playing error, still yes the instrument is not perfectly 100% tuned for the rest of the song

it's like MK's very first note on Corned Beef City, a very small error on a slide sounds really bad

I’m glad to see the FLAC files are now an (entirely respectable! OK, Herlock?) 48kHz. I see Guy said that’s what they should be on his forum today. Maybe this absurd problem has been sorted.

Herlock, I agree there’s not much point reopening the debate (though I notice I’m not the only one occasionally nagging Guy for a hi res issue of DTRW). But where do you live? I’d love to play you different resolutions through my pretty high end system. I believe you will hear a difference! (I’m in Guildford, UK)
I live in France :)

I am open to your test, provided we agree on the methodology. It is too easy to compare two recordings that do not come from the same master in the first place. Some recordings labelled "high-res" do indeed sound better than CD, but that because they come from a remastered recording, not because they are high-res ! The only valid test is to play a "high-res" recording, sometimes with no restriction, sometimes with a 44.1/16 limitation loop, and ask which one is which on a number of trial A/B/C double blind test). If the number of right guesses is 50%, that mean you are actually guessing, so no audible difference ,:)

If you can accomodate that, no problem. Otherwise no point :)

Cheers

I have one or two classical recordings, by specialist Norwegian label 2L, which give the same performance at different resolutions. I agree with you that comparisons are often invalidated by different mastering etc. But the only difference with these is bits and maximum frequency. But are you ever going to be in Surrey?
How can you be 100% sure it is the same master, if there are two different products ? The only way to be sure is to have one product only (the "high-res") and "downgrade" it on the fly to CD resolution. Without making it worse on purpose of course :)
No plans to come at the moment, but, you never know ! :) Cheers

48 is absolutely fine. The 48 number can be divided by a lot of numbers, which is good for mixing. 44.1 is enough but it is an absurd number that corresponds to nothing but old VHS video standard... But since this is redbook specs you must use it to produce CDs. No need to use it to produce FLAC files, though, so 48 is the right standard.

They re-issued the Barcelona FLAC file, now 48khz, very good sound. (I bought it again)

First version: 706,6 MB
Second Version: 930,9 MB

Does everyone get a new link with the right files? Has the mp3 also changed in size?

Regarding the Barcelona recording: No, I did not receive a new email or new link. My first email’s link still works but leads to a new zip file (MP3). The old one was 323 MB, the new one 325 MB. It’s a different mix and completely different cut. Overall: the cut is way better but the mix is really different. Horn section has been put a little more in the background. Jim’s piano is more present in OES, Guy’s keys less. Not necessarily better in terms of mix, but the overall sound is better. Their first attempt was an average quality audience recording... ;D

From above: First version: 706,6 MB; Second Version: 930,9 MB

I received my link quite late (2 days ago) - the downloaded, unzipped file is 887 MB.  I guess I have the 48k one right?

By the way, what is the method to check the FLAC files to see what hz they are recorded at?

I use winamp and it automatically shows the khz while playing, you could try the same

Although the start was not great, we can now happily praise ourselves with very qualitative recordings! Madrid sounds great! Hope for a few more changes in the set for a nice list of numbers.  :clap :clap

The line goes up, Madrid sounding better overall, better mixed, more effects on MK vocal. Edit: even better than Valencia, I like it
