Sky And Water  Mark Knopfler (4:33)

LYRICS

There’s only sky and water
As far as we can see
You came in a dream last night
Dear heart, you spoke to me
There’s only sky and water
And never so alone
When we cut the captain loose
We cut all ties with home
Lord, we cut all ties with home

We let the tyrant drift away
In one of his own boats
I don’t know why I stopped the hands
From going for his throat
Every man did curse the day
He signed up for the trip
And every man did know
This was no way to run a ship

Good riddance to his bitter soul
And now we have the brig
It’s sure we’ll not be sailing home
To dance the hempen jig
There’s only sky and water
We sleep and dream of land
But free of chains of iron
And the captain’s iron hand
Lord, the captain’s iron hand

He lashed me to a grating
For the nine claws of the cat
And now I have a fever
But I give no thought to that
I am high over the water
I sleep and dream of land
Free of chains of iron
And the captain’s iron hand
Lord, the captain’s iron hand

Ok the Bounty was not a Brig. So this is not about it. Also some historical details would be not correct in that case.. Fletcher Christian has never been lashed and Bligh was not the tyrant as that he was portrayed in three movies.
The chains imply that it could be a slave?
This song has the easiest appeal from the new ones. Hurts me that I cannot crack it's code nevertheless.

Of course it is also likely that no real historical event is portrayed here by Mark. But I bet it is based on a book or a movie.

Very nice tune.  Kind of sea shanty.  Mark very comfortable doing this kind of stuff.  Folkies present.  Could easily have come from the Golden Heart sessions.

Great track! I like the pipe songs more than the Jazzy trumpet songs.

Totally agree! It would even fit on the STP album in my opinion.

The folkies are used sensitively on their tracks in this album I feel; not as dominant as they usually are.  This is a good thing I think.  I wouldn't mind there being more songs like this if their use was more discrete like this.

What a great song - a Top 5 for me i think and I wish it was on the deluxe version - hoping I can get a great sounding version of this. Another case of Follow The Ribbon for me!

Is there any way to listen to these bonus tracks without the LPs? I'm very curious how the bonus tracks turned out.

Problem now Mr G, is that we have way too much trumpet and ruddy Saxophone instead.....Grrrrrrr

I'm quite enjoying that for now.  Of course, the enjoyment would wear off if I had been listening to it on Mark's albums for as long as I've heard the folkies.

Love the Trumpet, especially the solo on Heavy up. Also Sax on Nobody Does That is finally that what Nigel is obviously capable of doing.. really great ..
