Yes I agree Dusty. On 2nd thoughts the Jap-pop & bubblegum rock era was well before the Deptford times. Almost certainly another muso though, but  hard to come up with a likely candidate, specific to the 60's and early 70's?
Someone who was popular in the pop/rock scene in Japan and France?

I don't think it's about Alan at all. Sounds like he's talking about some session musician from the 1960's or 1970's he met or heard of who'd record anything he was given in order to make a living but wasn't really good at any particular style, just average overall.

I wouldn't be so literal, my guess is it's metaphorical, a musician who'd take any session he came across. And even if it was literal, as a session musician (just another gun) he wouldn't be popular, he'd just be playing for artists who were.

You may well be onto something there. In many of Mark's works, I still find it difficult to know when he literally has someone specific in mind, like the guy in the store on MFN or the Brexit guy in MBR, and then we have the guy with 2 fingers not working and a crook back in MM. I think this is what makes Mark such a formidable storyteller.

The way he crafts these stories reminds me of a quote that he made eons ago, and it was about how his songs “work on so many different levels”. Here we are all these years later with some of his most enduring fans are we are still finding these same levels of difference he referred to back then. I think this may, actually be at the crux of my “obsession” (via my pretty average attempts at putting some of these stories onto a visual level), for editing these videos I try to upload on AMIT TV.

Don't suck me in and the other bonus songs can be found on the limited edition Boxset, which contains both CD and vinyl. If i remember right there was a download option too, can't remember if it was for the boxset purchases or any of the other editions.
