LE, guess on guitar after one listen was Gibson 330.

yes maybe.
I thougth it sounds P90 to me, so why not the blue pensa ?

It was just my thought, more of a "boxy" sound than the Pensa which actually doesn't sound that different to the Les Pauls. Also MK said in Guitarist magazine that he used the 330 on the album, but I don't have anything else to go on!

definitely not the Pensa, could be the 330

Same guitar used on Blood and Water
If I realised that the chances were slim,
How come I'm so surprised when the tide rolled in

Had a first good listen to this track now (with proper sound quality). This song has great potential, but I feel both the production and Mark's vocals are too restrained somehow to make it really groove and rock. I can just imagine how it would have sounded with the original DS sound and Mark singing like he did on In The Gallery ("mmmmmm Harry made a bareback rider"). I know, 40 years ago and all that, but THAT'S what this song should have sounded like - in my mind ha-ha Could be great live!

Agree about the early Straits feel and it being somewhat subdued. Which might be due to the the recording from vinyl, though. I'm confident that the official release will sound much sharper. And I love this song, too - it's true that Mark could publish a whole - brilliant - album with just B-sides by now. Even a double album.

By the way, did anybody think that the vocal pause before "Don't even ask, my friend"/"Don't wanna know, my friend" etc. was longer than you'd expect when you first listen to it? Very unexpected rhythmically. I'm sure musicians have a technical term for that.

Oh, and another detail. There's one little thing in the lyrics here that I stumbled upon: "A pessimist in advance". Is there any other way to be a pessimist? Isn't pessimism something that happens in advance by definition? You can't be a pessimist in retrospect, can you.

This might be a rare instance of Mark not being super careful with his lyrics.

I think he just means a pessimistic predisposition.

sure, there is far enough stuff to release this kind of comp, but I prefer listen to the bonus/b-sides tracks just after the album, rather than all of them in a row.
because in terme of sound and production, they are "dated" and fit more with the songs from the same era.

I prefer listen to "Time in the sun" just after "Piper to the end", or "Summer of love" just after "don't crash the ambulance", rather than listen to them in a row, between "let's see you" and "occupation blues". It would not make really "muscial" sense to me, so to say

That said, of course if such an "album" wille be releasde one day, of course I'll buy it !But not sure if I will listent to it as a whole piece

My guess is the signature Strat or, believe it or not, the good old red Schecter.

The lyrics to this one seem to be quite "direct" if not personal, as if they relate to past encounters or observations?

Remember that jack of all trades
And a master of none
Played rock or pop, they’d tell him what
He was just another gun
Teenybop in Tokyo
Bubblegum in France

This was the time when Mark & Dire Straits were living on lentils at Deptford...trying to get a start...

your so-called business partner
Was another fair weather friend
All he really cared about
Was what was due his end
He liked to check his bank account
Hang with the pimps and liars
Come creeping by to sniff the wind
Show up to kick the tyres

A music or business Manager? Someone who managed 'their' business, or for a friend? Probably describes most Music Industry managers from all era's...  ;)

Your second cousin’s Uncle Frank
Is coming into town
With crap for all the family
And to see what’s going down
He’ll eat you out of house and home
Disappear your wine
Says he could have been a concert pianist
If he’d only had the time

Un-unwanted older relative of a friend or acquaintance who was (strong on the tooth) who out stayed their welcome?

Disagree with your interpretation of the first verse, appears to be about a session musician of some sort.

I'm wondering if the first verse is a 'pop' at DS Legacy??
The third verse is legendary, and it always makes me chuckle. Perhaps MK had an 'Uncle' Frank who would bring 'crap' when he visited??

Maybe the "concert pianist" part is a pop at AC in that case... :think

"Eat you out of house and home" - reference to Phil eating the sausages!  Er, or whomever it was...  ;D
"...and I blew up the radio in pretty short order."

'Jack of all trades, master of none' - AC again??

Actually the more you read the lyrics the more it could be about AC.....
