I used to love a bit of folding
Just for getting by
A wad of cash
Now that’s out of date
And so am I
As pie and mash

Could someone please explain?

He used to have cadh with him? Why should that be out of date now?

People pay by debit/credit card, maybe?

When I feel like a using a dad joke, i often ask a cashier if they "still accept cash?" - usually provokes confusion, a minor smile and then rolling of the eyes from my wife.
Hey, i`ve got a truffle dog - finally a song the ordinary man can relate too!

Some cross over with this and corned beef city actually...that mentioned "folding" meaning money and "cash in hand" and a greasy spoon cafe selling egg, chips and beans etc.....

What would I do without you native speakers from AMIT:) It's so cool to learn these little details about other languages, things I'd never be able to figure out by myself.

I still have a problem with the lyrics though, doesn't feel like words and melody belong together. Fortunately I'm able to plug it out and enjoy the song, which is gorgeous.

So that explains indeed that "a man out of time" hint..  (no offence Fletch  ;D)

It's like "Old pigweed" not being really about cooking, LOL

Folding=paper money
Getting by=making enough money to pay bills etc.
Wad=thick roll of money

Out of date due to the use of credit cards.  Pie and mash out of date due to...toasties?

Could it be possible that the bacon roll is also a metaphor as in to bring home the bacon and a roll of money?

Actually it can be. If we think the character is saying he used to have a better work, maybe he's asking where all his money went? A roll of money?

It reminds me when I was working at a Hotel Recepction. I saw too much "big boys" having rolls of 100, 200 and even 500 euros in their bags or pockets, unrolled one and pay me for the room or their meal at the hotel restaurant.

If you search Beacon Roll in the Urban Dictionary you would be  surprised of what it says, due to forum rules, I let you check.

If I realised that the chances were slim,
How come I'm so surprised when the tide rolled in

I especially love the examples, like "let me stick my sausage in your bacon roll". So at least we have a sausage connection.

But I'm pretty sure it's not the meaning Mark was trying to convey.

By the way, is it the sounds of people eating in the beginning of the song? Man, I'm stunned with the originality.

We have "road" in the album title, let's have a road on the cover then!
We have "bacon" in the song title, let's have people eating in the intro!

 :hmm

And good moaning to you, too.

So the café noises are a problem now. Tell us how you would have done it. I'm holding my breath.
