Yes, and with the "just so you know."

I'm with you & LE, it's an interesting one, i like the vague ones ; let's our imagination build a character.

"When somebody keeps denying something to the point where you start to think they actually did it."

So our man keeps denying he was sacked, but actually he was!

Yep, I just read all your pleas! Sorry, I only just got around to listening to them myself, and the lyric of this one interested me. I'm quite happy to wait till Friday for a good ol proper listen :)

Is he really now in a situation where he feels comfortable and at home?
I don't think so.
Maybe he had to leave because he didn't fit in/misbehaved with the new regime?
And maybe the "s'cuse me...where is.." shows how irritated and stressed out he is by the customers.
So the chorus goes against what he is actually telling.

I think he's the waiter and he's explaining to a customer, maybe someone who he knows, why he's now working in the cafe.   He left his job voluntarily, he didn't get the elbow, because he was tired of all the team building etc and was outside of his comfort zone - he is much more comfortable working in the cafe.   The customer asks where is his bacon roll and he is offered, as an alternative, a toastie.

Maybe the bacon roll is the dreamed job and the toastie the comfortable reality?

Yes but maybe he still denies it. Lies to himself.

I could order you a toastie
Just like that one there
Or the same in plain white bread
When you’re dealing with a toastie
What do you prefer
Brown or red?

That one ...   says who? Is that they way a seller talks to a customer? tough...

This one so far is to me the best interpretation so far

Either he is deying it to himself or he is trying to justify to customers why he, who earned well before, now has to work in a greasy spoon cafe and has to explain embarrassingly the different kind of toasties they serve and has to endure the almost humiliating customers aksing why their bacon roll has not yet been served.

So on the surface level the theme of the song could be either reality displacement or having to live with the consequences of not fitting in (or wanting to) with the absurdities of a "new regime".

And the melody going contrary to the tragic of the lyrics, which would be classic MK.

I used to love a bit of folding
Just for getting by
A wad of cash
Now that’s out of date
And so am I
As pie and mash

Could someone please explain?

He used to have cadh with him? Why should that be out of date now?

Two things....cash generally is not used the same way it was - most people pay by card - and cash in hand jobs are also harder to find these days.....also - a third thing - he has less money generally than he did......because he doesn;t have the same kind of job.....less well paid - or unemplyed if he is a customer in the cafe rather than a worker.
