I think this might just be the masterpiece on the album.
I think so too, it's a great song and one of my favorite.

What's that strange sound like a pop at around 3:15?

By the way, I love this song too :)

It's a nice song but I don't like when arranging the song, you have instruments playing exactly the same MK is singing, instead of doing something creative and nice. Like here, that the trump's exactly the same MK sings. It's beautiful anyway, but it's just an easy filling.

I quite like this one too. Don't think it's a masterpiece but it does show how versatile Mark is.

This song could have been a standard from the American songbook. It’s new and original but has that kind of timeless quality to sound like a classic, a masterpiece. Really impressive and above all, beautiful!

Great ballad but the lyrics hint of a dark back story like Hill Farmer Blues.  Does anyone else feel that?

Not particularly, I’m afraid. But I still think it’s a great song, although it’s so un-Straitsy I can see why not everyone would like it.

Both this and Slow Learner are really pretty jazzy crooner type songs, but I'm not sure Mark's voice suits them well. I'd love to hear Diana Krall do a version of them.

I know what you mean.  I'm not sure it's that his voice doesn't suit them so much as we're just not used to hearing him singing like this.  There's just something that doesn't sit right.

Funnily enough, I'd already suggested Diana Krall in correspondence with my brother.
I do think When You Leave is a vastly better song than Slow Learner.

Musically they are rather similar, but the lyrics of When You Leave are much better (IMO). Really beautiful writing. Lyrically, Slow Learner bothers me because I find the way that Mark talks about himself (struggles with zipping up a jacket, etc. - really???) kind of irritating. That coupled with the 'serious' music, I don't know what to make of it. Maybe it would work better (for me) if the music was more humorous, as if he were laughing at himself.

I find it tastes like "Manha de carnaval" from the Black Orpheus opera...
