If he wrote songs as TR or R&J we would be like, “ I prefer TR or R&J...“, we are eternally unsatisfied.

Mark is doing Mark that’s it.
If I realised that the chances were slim,
How come I'm so surprised when the tide rolled in

the first time I heard the song I immediately heard the melodic line from "The letter" in the chorus, but TOTT wasn't evident to me

and ALL people I know that are not die hard fans like us, tell ALL the same thing : "hey it's clearly soundind Dire Straits !"

so we try to find similarities,we make comparaisons with other songs, we analyse the guitar tone, we decortic Mark's voice, we study the melody, the chords, etc.....

BUT from a lamba point of view : that song "sounds" like Dire Straits. And it's not me who is saying this, it's just many people that listen to many many kind of other musics, and have a "global" vision of DS and MK. And these same people didn't say this when the heard, let's say, Get lucky at taratata tv show for example.

So yes, we dire hard fans can say, no it doesn't soudn like DS, etc... but honestly, dont you think that it's a little bit closer to what people think of "DS sound" than other slow folk songs he made in the past ? And I confirm that Iove these songs too, that's not the debate.

I think the synths are a major reason why this feels more DS than Mark's solo work. Especially why non-die hards would think that way. Synths plus "soft rock" plus radio-friendly song. That really was the DS sound in the 80s, which of course the sound that most people associate with DS.

But I guess that most would agree that IF it was really a Dire Straits song, it would have been a b-side most probably as it wouldn't have managed to get on an Dire Straits album...  ;D

Maybe. But it's definitely better than Les Boys or One World :)

Well it’s something entirely new isn’t it? For me, it has a kind of Leonard Cohen feeling in it, don’t know exactly but I don’t dislike it. It’s new and fresh for sure. It’s way more refreshing compared to the time KTGC came out. Nice record thoug I found it far from surprising, more something I expected at that time. This sounds like it had to be written one day or another an finally the day has arrived. Let’s see what the rest of the album will bring. Maybe a complete setlist change too... :clap

I do feel the DS influence on this song, especially the intro, which sounds a bit like "Follow Me Home".

I have listened to both tracks now several times in a row and I haven't for the life of me any idea where BOTDF should sound like TOTT... maybe I am too facile...

It's very strange, but it jumped out at me immediately I heard it for the first few times.  Now, however, it's harder for me to hear the resemblance - it was on the verses "Hand me down...." etc.     I still hear "The Letter" from 1.44 to 1.54,   "Goin' all the way"......  both times!    :)

As I said earlier, my brain is tuned to ignore!   ;D

I know it doesn't sound remotely like BOTDF, but Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" would fit in the same "type" of song!

Ok thank you, tobi777. This could be the only part for me, but nowhere near so obvious that it would jump into your face immediately. I would never say this is another Version of TOTT.

I remember similar moments on Heart Full Of Holes and on Monteleone, a few notes echoeing from older songs.
I am not trying to defend him, I am the first to call it recycling for a couple of years now. But this time I suspect a little picky hysterical search for stuff like this.
