Hello everyone

I'm Jon

I'm in my early forties, originally from Scotland, but living in London (although I've just bought a house by the sea).

I first heard Dire Straits when Sultans came out, but it wasn't until Making Movies that I really got into Dire Straits.  My favourite albums now are the ones either side of MM.  Love Over Gold, because it has a more expansive range of textures and stylings, which appeals to the prog rock fan in me.  Communique because it's just a great collection of songs.

Up until recently, I hadn't really heard much of MK's solo material, so I'm just starting to explore that now.

In my spare time, I'm a musician (of sorts!).  Some of you may know me as the bass player in the Dire Straits tribute band Dire Fakes.  When I'm not playing with them, I have a few other projects on the go, including a tribute to Rush that I hope will be performing live later this year.

I'm hoping that Dire Fakes (and of course the other MK/DS tributes) will be allowed to post gig details here.  This is possible on most of the band forums I'm on, but I don't want to upset anyone here.  Very selfish I know, but it would be good to be able to publicise our shows to an interested audience.  I hope some of you would be interested!

OK, apologies for not getting round to posting in this thread until now.

I'm Matt

Born 1977

I can first remember becoming aware of DS when Money for Nothing came out. It was a great song, but the video was of course a big deal back then too, I just loved it. A friend of my dad's gave me his cassette of Brothers in Arms when he was drunk at a party at my dad's house, but I only used to listen to Money for Nothing and Walk of Life, then rewind the tape (I was just a kid).

My brother gave me the compilation album Money for Nothing in 1989, but again, I really only listened to Money for Nothing and Walk of Life.

By 1991 I was a little older (13 I guess by the time OES came out). I'd heard that the new Dire Straits video was based on Thunderbirds, so being a big Thunderbirds fan, I stayed up late to watch "The Making of Calling Elvis" on Channel 4 here in the UK. (In fact I still have it on video somewhere).

I loved the video and the song and went back to listen to Brothers in Arms and Money for Nothing. Turns out I loved ALL the songs. I used to go over to my friend's house because his dad had bought the OES album, and just get him to play it constantly.

I got my first CD player for Christmas in 1992, and gradually started buying up the DS back catalogue. By then I was hooked. Since then I've been fairly obsessive, seeing MK live for the first time in Aberdeen on the Golden Heart Tour in 96 and quite a few times since.

Around 93 I decided that I wanted to try to play guitar like MK, and the guitar has since become my other obsession in life, I've got loads of them now, too many, and I've played in a few bands over the years.

I live in Aberdeen with my wife and 1 year old son, but I'm moving to Edinburgh next month.

Other than MK my favourite other artist is Steve Earle. I used to be a big fan of Paul Simon/Simon and Garfunkel, but I find myself drifting away. A lot of my other favourite artists are country people like Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris although I'm also very into Bob Dylan. Leonard Cohen too.

Great to see you on here Jon, you need to try and get Alan on here now as well. ;)

Also Draad, good to see you too. I have big connections with Sussex, i spend a lot of my time in Hastings, where my grandparents used to live. It's a great part of the country.
