This thread is 30 pages long already and I haven't read it all but I'll be surprised if it hasn't been noticed this song is about Woody Strode.

And how would you bring him together with this ...

Back in Blighty there’s a flat
On a grimy sink estate
That’s why he walked out of that
And went to the Golden State
Left the baccy and the beer
Where he was born and bred
Now he’s cutting it out here
With the quick and the dead

With "Blighty" being slang for Great Britain?  ;D  :think

I always thought that thread was the flying path of the bird... as he is so small and fast  and you can hardly follow with your eyes ...

LE

I hadn't thought of it like that. Doesn't quite work for me though. (Edit to add: oh... i see what you mean, the wing-flapping and whirring flight path of the tiny little bird being so fast it is like a squiggly and random little piece of thread. Interesting.)
I still think though that perhaps the thread could be a bird feeder hanging from his lemon tree suspended from a very thin thread which is spinning as the darting bird feeds? Interesting that the whirring sound is externalised from the apartment of the character in the song. There are other references to sound and sounds within the songs on the album. 'When You Leave', for example. Anyway... the hummingbird is out by his screendoor. I also like to think the thread could be a thread such as this on an internet forum? The whirring of mouse wheels as people try to elucidate the exact meaning? Haha! At any rate, it is a very interesting opening lyric. Perhaps the producer the central character is going to meet is... himself. That old thing about us being the producers, directors and actors of our own lives.

These are interesting observations, that is for sure. You never know, even if it sounds a little far-fetched at first....

Hints:

1. Hailwood was a super motorbike racer from the UK.
2. After winning pretty much everything in Europe he won his first race in the US in California (Golden State).
3. There's a picture of another famous racer Barry Sheene riding Hailwood's Ducati on the internet - and for some reason cockney rebel is tagged on it (https://www.mortonsarchive.com/v/photos/94058bgp/18448508804/x2012-barry-sheene-bookazine-classic).
4. Lemon Tree Passage Rd seems to be a motorbike racing spot in Newcastle.

And the most important one...

5. There's a doc on Formula 1 from the 1970's called "The Quick and the Dead" starring... Mike Hailwood.

Considering Mark's passion for the sport I tend to believe it makes a whole lot of sense.

Interesting thoughts but I still don't think it's correct, doesn't fit with the mango, meeting a producer etc

But he often mixes stories up, so those protagonists aren't recognisable at first sight.

Did he ever live in LA? Would he be meeting a producer?

I'm not being argumentative here by the way, I want to know too :)

He won his first american race in California. Re the producer perhaps he had an argument with the documentary’s.

I gave up the idea that it might be a real character. To me it seems to be an archetype of that sort of man who "made it". He came from difficult conditions but his will and skills, his character and "the gleam of a hunter's eye helped him to reach what he has now.
The mango stands for a healthy life, he lives on one of the nicest places on Earth, paradise if you like, and is fully aware of what he reached and where he comes from: Complacent, like the cat that got the cream.

I think it's not automatically good songwriting by the way when so many people need so much time to crack the code of a song.
