Could it be the song about Simon Cowell, like early bird?

He's a British that went to LA too...

Why go at him twice?

That would seem quite petty.

He wrote two songs about Jerry Springer (el macho and devilbaby) and two about Colonel Parker (back to Tupelo and gator blood)

You're right there.

Although these semi-biographical songs can be interesting in terms of lyrics, they do very little for me emotionally. Musically they can be satisfying, but I just can't get worked up about songs about Ray Kroc or Simon Cowell or Sonny Liston. In the case of Boom Like That, you may say it's an indirect comment on society and unbridled capitalism, but if Mark really wanted to make such comments, I'd wish he'd be more blunt, like Bob Dylan or John Hiatt or Bruce Springsteen.

Did he ever say El Macho was about Springer?

I think so...  but there's a reference in the lyrics as well:

They say you're a star
That's what the boys all say you are
I don't see much TV
So you don't mean shit to me
But you look like a fine thing Jerry

I don't remember him saying it was about Springer... in fact I remember him saying he picked Jerry because it could be a man or a woman... but my memory is an unreliable witness. :)

I recall during the STP promotion that he saw a Spanish painting called "el macho" (which is totally unknown to me) and he liked the name, and that Jerry was because Springer, because of the tv shit etc he mentions, but I also recall him saying that he said Jerry just without reason like you say...

I bet is a mixture of things, but the Jerry Springer thing was the one I heard that makes more sense specially because of the shit tv reference.

It's like when he explained about "Coyote", he said once that he was watching cartoons with his sons, then in other interviews said that "maybe I wasn´t watching cartoons with my sons, it just came to mind" etc etc etc

I like that he sometimes let the fans to pick up the meaning of the songs, but sometimes he does a mess with explanations as well, LOL

Mark Knopfler, or maybe just his new single, will be on the BBC Radio 2 Ken Bruce show this morning. The show is currently live now, 9.55 BST.

Hello guys. Thanks for giving me the chance to hear the new song. My modest judgment: I must say that the intro is very reminiscent of the classic dream style of the DS while the song is reminiscent of the first solo Mark Knopfler (Golden Heart). It is a song with a strong impact, the only thing that is a bit out of place is the central part (which I think in the version of the single radio will be cut), the sax is magnificent. Finally, the guitar is really very present this time, both in the rhythm section and in the solo part. Also the final part is worthy of the Knopfler style: guitar solos at the right time. Great beautiful single! ;)

The radio edit doesn't have the guitar solo in the middle, the sax solo is still there
