I don't want to be the old lady here on the forum, but...  I love that there is so much discussion about what we love and hate about these five minutes of Mark's music!!   ;D   I would have loved to have had these conversations with people around the world back in the 80s and 90s, instead of waiting for the next DS Information Service newsletter to arrive in the mail.

This is not the best song, and I'm really struggling with the saxophone.  But I have listened to it at least 50 times at work, at home, in the car, with earbuds on my phone and I love it because it's Mark and because I've been a fan for all these years.   I probably enjoy the anticipation for a new album more than I enjoy hearing the new songs.   And I know there will be at least one song on the album that I will fall in love with and listen to for all the years to come.

Three thoughts, apropos of nothing:

- Border Reiver IS amazing live.
- Why is everyone so down on Beryl?
- Best line of the thread so far, hands down:  if the whole album is like this I say "Let's go". But I think it will be bagpipes all over again :D

For perspective, it's been 12,065 days since I saw the Brothers in Arms tour at the Greek Theater in my hometown, Los Angeles.   Really smiled at "The LA Times lies on the stove / warming there like bread."    As much as I'm forgiving of Mark and his music as the years wear on, I love both the tunes AND the discussions and disagreements on here so much.    You guys are all terrific.

Good song or not, it makes me nuts that I am not able to get to the bottom of who this song is about. I know that many of you don't care much about the lyrics as long as it sounds good and I wish I could think the same way. But I HAVE to get to know what So any input or ideas are very welcome.

In the meantime I think (again) it must be a concrete person. The chopping has something brutal, the Hunter's gleam in the eye seems to direct us to a dangerous man, maybe a criminal, and the peaceful atmosphere with the nice weather seems to be a contrast to this.

The Hamden Shuffle and the old one-two seems to direct in no other direction than boxing.

I don't know that much about boxing... But it would fit with all the aspects of the song.

Or maybe they are two characters... Someone in LA and other person from the UK and one says to the other "good on you son"

Ray Winstone?  Even has Mark's glasses on here so it must be him.  :lol

I think Robert Day is too obscure a director.  Can't see Mark even being aware of him let alone writing a song about him.

I can't believe that I loved him as Will in Robin of Sherwood as I loved the whole series and that he is in Departed, one of my all-time-favourites and never made the connection that he is the same guy.  :lol

So how probable is it? I asked Guy about it already but his answer was not clear. "Absolutely not" ...

I have Problems with Guy's answer. How do you understand it? I asked if it really would give too much away also and wonder how he means it to be honest

It depends on whether he had a smile on his face as he was typing or not!  So either we've cracked it or we're way off. I don't expect him to tell us we're right though, do you?

I know nothing about boxing, but maybe Charley White (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charley_White) or Johnny Owen (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Owen)? Both Uk born boxers that are apparently quite well-known, and both ended up in L.A. However, nothing on films or cooking with both  :hmm
