Time is a jetplane, it moves too fast.
...and still it sounds fresh and new. It's a timeless masterpiece.

What a fantastic debut album. I think it's interesting how they managed with such a sparse and minimalistic production to paint so dramatic/filmatic pictures. Obviously it owes much to Mark's excellent songwriting, but the music is spot on. In my opinion, they were much more than a pub band, or, as Mark likes to put it, a "little beat group".

I don't mean to derail the thread, but it would have been so wonderful to hear those four doing music together again (in a parallel universe where they all still were friends). They had that "band" thing, where the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. Oh, well.

When I first listened to DS little did I know that band would change my life forever, and that album was the beginning of this evergoing journey.

Thanks for reminding us all of that  :wave

My first album was Brothers In Arms but I also felt that band would change my life. It happened...

By the way, David looks really old on that photo (from 2017, I found out), or maybe he was ill? He looked very youthful for so long, unlike his brother.

I prefer the photos from 40 years ago. ;)

Like most people it was the BIA album that got me into DS, but it was their early music that made me a fan.

In my case that was Alchemy, my brother had the vinyl and would play it every single day by our swimming pool when I was a kid. It got stuck somewhere in the back of my head. I was into brazilian pop-rock (some good stuff actually) at that time but as soon as I grew out of that I started to dig into Dire Straits and there was no going back. Alchemy again, BIA... and shortly afterwards the original version of Sultans from the MFN compilation. If I remember correctly that's how it went but I might be wrong, my memory isn't the most reliable source these days.

Beautiful memories Eddie

I had three beginnings. Love Over Gold cassette tape, but I deleted all tracks except Telegraph Road ... Walk of Life video clip and Brothers In Arms album.

Has Mark ever played songs from the Dire Straits debut album during his solo tours (apart from Sultans Of Swing of course)?

During HIS solo tours he played Water of Love. Setting Me Up was often played during the Notting Hillbillies shows however.

Setting me up has been considered for his solo tours but never played.
