GET LUCKY Press information
« on: June 29, 2009, 08:13:25 PM »
Hi,
thanks to google alerts, I found this german link:
http://www.cypress-agentur.de/fileadmin/pdf/mod_press/MARK_KNOPFLER_Bio_Deutsch_cp1.pdf

I came home from work a few minutes ago, but these are the most important informations:

Get Lucky, a song about a man that MK met when he was 15, who played in a soul band in the winter and worked on a farm in the summer to be on the road all the time: MK admired him a lot...
So Far From The Clyde, an hommage to the era of great steamships...
Border Reiver, about a truck driver and the hard times in the 60`s. Song is called a link to "southbound again" because MK saw all the lorries and trucks
on the A1 in Newcastle (?) and hitchhiked with them...
Monteleone is NOT about the Hotel but about a great first class guitar builder
Piper to the End is about his Uncle Freddie, (Uncle Kingsleys brother), who played pipes at the Tyneside Scottish Brigade and died in France in 1940...
He never knew him but his mother spoke a lot about him...

The album has "unmistakable MK typical british touch with folk and blues influences" whatever that means... It is called a "wahnsinnig" broad spectrum of themes and is "staggering orchestrated"...

Have fun,

LovExpresso

Well, here is the translation I tried. Please remember I am not english spoken, so there might be some mistakes, but I think it is worth it to let you know the concrete news and facts from this very interesting piece. Anybody who has a better idea of some phrases and can correct me is very welcome!
So here is my try:

When the unwritten law was passed that grown/experienced musicians become uninspired through the years, obviously Mark Knopfler paid no attention. Probably he was busy writing new songs, playing concerts

Thanks for taking the time to translate LE.
It was very interesting.
I'm off to bed now, with the images of the songs in my head. :)

Sweet dreams :)

Thanks for the hard work LE.

You can all apologise to me now for doubting my prediction that this was about guitars. ;)

LOV -- Thanks so much for finding and translating this story.
This has me really anticipating this album because I think, for the most part, MK's best works are the ones that deal with his personal experiences (though Telegraph Road is my all-time favorite, and it's not autobiographical).

You are welcome!
Thinking about "Border Reiver": I remember that already about "Fare Thee Well Northumberland" it was said that this song was connected to
"Southbound Again", thematically. So it seems that this song from 1978 describes a very important time in MK

Hi, folks,

on the MKNews forurm there is a "proper" translation of this press media information done by one forum member (I never heard of). So if you want to compare and maybe geat "the real" thing, just take a look over there! However, I think I nailed it more or less, but it is always good to have work done in a right manner by professionals.

Boy, this song "Border Reiver" starts to fire my imagination, I am really curious how it will sound...

All the best,

LovExpresso

Thanks for the translation, Love Expresso! You definitely nailed it. In my opinion, your version is "the real thing" and is better than the one at MKNews. I don't speak German, so I can't vouch for the accuracy of either one, but as a native English speaker I can say yours is easier to understand and is a lot more natural (and correct).

The more I read about this record, the more excited I get!
